impressions on Jadot (mostly 2010s)

notes from recent Jadot focused tasting for the trade:

excuse typos and spellings. blasting this out pretty fast. busy days…

WHITES:

2012 macon village blanc “grange magnien”
nose: more mineral than typical macon. brighter fruit and just barely ripe orchard fruit. excellent.
palate: lighter weight, more linear and tighter than typical macon. very much enjoyed this, esp for the price, great QPR

2009 cote du nuit villages “le vaucrain”
nose: shy
palate: low acid, ripeness just right, but lack tension and energy. pass

2010 puligny folatieres $110ish locally
nose: more restraint than usual. hint of white flowers and white orchard fruit. pretty nose
palate: great energy, more floral and white fruit, hint of pear and white pepper. tight and linear. no sign of overt battonage or oak usage.
comments: while i love whats in the glass i am not sure if this wine captures the spirit or typicity of folatieres. i expect richer, rounder flavours with more stuffing. this came across as a perrieres…

2010 corton charlie $180ish locally
nose: perfect every way. full of energy and piercing aromatics
palate: laser guidance delivery of components. huge dry extract. lost of energy on attack, mid and finish. only a slight hint of oak toast on the very last few second of the finish, but so much wine and fruit here to absorb this all and then sum.
comment: i was very pleased by this effort and impressed by its craft, esp in jadot white history.

REDS:

2010 savigny le beaune 1er les narbatons $40ish locally
nose: high toned, floral perfume, hint of red fruit.
palate: simply but nicely balanced. more than a great quaffer, excellent stuff considering the pedigree, price, etc.

2010 beaune 1er cru bucherottes
nose: gin, conifer tinged red fruit. balsam notes. over delivers in complexity
palate: with those notes ont eh nose i expected bitterness, green andangular palate. but i was pleasently surpirsed to see that none of those notes were on palate. palate was silky, lighter bodied than expected. finish is shortish but pleasent. delicious wine that over delivers on nose and simpler on palate.

2010 volnay 1er cru clos de la Bare $90ish locally
nose: chambolle amarouses like. rose, rose and more rose and pretty floral things. bright and perfect bramble red fruit.
palate: silk and laces. great focus, energy and length. hint of structured tannins linger on finish afterwards, but not rough or rustic in any way.
overall: if that elegance of the nose and entry carried all the way to the finish, it would have been even more awesome…

2010 pommard 1er cru la commarine $80ish locally
nose: closed
palate: softer adn brighter than typical pommard but the finish has those rustic, grippy tannins. not my style. more fo a chambolle, volnay, gevrey kinda guy. NSG and pommard are rarely my cup of tea.

2010 gevrey clos st jaques $170ish locally
nose: tad shy and not givign away much. red fruit, hint of iron and wild berries.
palate: jesus. not a hair out of place. such elegance and breeding. very clear this is a wine of pedigree and importance.
weightless weight, focused, velvet from beginning to the end.

2010 bonnes mares GC $320ish locally
nose: shy. cool. menthol fruit. tight.
palate: tight, young, ungiving. sense of ethereal and litheness. on the finish the dry extract and GC breeding shows itself. should be a promising wine but at the $300 price (almost double than that of CSJ or 3.5 of volnay, its easy pass for me)

2010 chapelle chambertin GC $250 locally
nose: wild. exotic. very open knit and very loud. 2009/2006 like.
palate: giving, lush, rich, tons of fruit, wight, glycerol. new worldish.
comment: i am undecided on this wine. dont get it. it was so different than anything else.

hope these are useful reference points for some of you.

I was happy to taste a totally unpoxed Chassagne 1er 08 last night. Regrettably it was corked to buggery.
Those GCs are becoming ridiculously expensive.

very true Tom. in lovely monopoly land of british columbia we often see prices to be almost at times double than that of best prices in US…

in this case i see bonnes mares and other GC jadot of late have indeed jumped up in price quite a bit.

as a side note, blind i would have not recognized jadot whites of 2010 (there was another 5-7 i tasted but didnt take detailed notes on) as Jadot. more cross between bouchard and boillot style, if that makes any sense.

always liked this house/domaine for its reds but liking the whites i tried in 09 and 10.

Jadot whites are a near-term gamble with premox. They have a very bad track record with their whites in terms of premature oxidation [and they are in denial about it]. See: http://oxidised-burgs.wikispaces.com/Jadot for notes. I lost half a case of 2005 Jadot Meursault Charmes. And 2005 Jadot Puligny Montrachet Folatieres showed the same signs so I drank it up
