They’re completely broke - and they’ve probably been effectively [actuarially] broke for decades now - and there isn’t enough tax revenue in the entire Midwest [much less just the state of Illinois] to save them.
Either the Fed throws them a trillion in fake money [maybe Rahmbo can call in some favors with Yellen and Fischer, the way that Blankfein was able to do with Timmy Geithner back in 2008], or else Chicago and the state of Illinois will assume room temperature in the very near future.
If I buy from retailers or wineries that can’t ship to NJ, I have the wine shipped to Portland Wine Storage in Oregon. They then ship it to me, usually after consolidating several shipments. Yes, it adds a few bucks to the cost but I get my wine without any problem. There are plenty of facilities like PWS all over the country. You might have to do some legwork to figure out if they can receive from your favorite areas and then ship to your state, but it’s worth it.
has anyone actually seen impact of this in illinois? as of yet, all my regular wine clubs, etc seem unaffected. crossing my fingers that this is the norm.
Everyone seems to think that money grows on trees.
Well, actually, back when money was made of paper, I guess it did grow on trees. In fact, it seems like maybe the Sonic fast food restaurant chain used that joke in a television commercial.
Anyway, if they’re already borrowing a billion to make a pension fund payment, then this story does not have a happy ending.
One way or another, it all ends in disaster.
Cracking down on tax revenue from booze will be like a day at the beach compared to what’s coming.
Wow, first out-of-state retailers, but if producers are now refusing to ship, that means I’m going to have to start buying local. Yikes. Where will I get my Scherrer??!?!?!?!?!?!?
Don’t know if this makes any difference, but there are some wineries that aren’t licensed to ship direct to certain states. There are several we buy from in California that we have to use a proxy service - Portland Wine Storage. They can then consolidate and ship to us in NJ. It could also be that Jay’s ‘allocation’ is coming through the retailer Wine Country, as in he ordered through them instead of direct and is just using the term ‘allocation’ in this instance.
