Due to inventory control issues (read: running out of cash and cellar space), I’ve decided to cut down drastically on any future wine purchases. But there are wines that we know we’ll regret not buying a few years down the road. So I’ve been playing a game to pick and choose the select few wines that I’m willing to pick up for my cellar year in, year out, and narrowed it down to a shortlist of five:
JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr GKA (but I’ll buy the regular Auslese if the GK is not available)
Doennhoff Niederhaeuser Hermannshoehle Auslese
Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays
Gaja Barbaresco
Chateau d’Yquem
Of course, I don’t buy all of those in any vintage, due to price, but you’re making me think maybe I should just abandon all other wine purchases, then I might actually be able to afford these
There is no wine I’ll buy each and every year. But if I had to choose from just five…
Francois Bertheau Chambolle Les Charmes
Bruno Clavelier Chambolle La Combe d’Orveaux
Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle Les Cras
Jean-Marie Fourrier Chambolle Les Gruenchers
Clos des Lambrays (because variety is the spice of life).
I foresee problems with availability if we all do this, but on a realistic budget (let’s face it, one really wants Mugnier Musigny, Rousseau Chambertin and the like):
Mpntlouis Choisilles - François Chidaine
Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot - Raveneau
Chianti Classico Riserva “Rancia” - Felsina
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d’Orveau - Bruno Clavelier
Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs - d’Angerville
and then pray that my current stash lasts until the above enter their window of maturity, or that we have quite a few early maturing vintages!
I drink way too much wine to have this hypothetical work for me … but, finding out Robert Thornton has Tattinger Comtes on his short list (the rest I could’ve guessed) has made the thread worthwhile!
I might have to break into your cellar occasionally.
For me,
Allemand Cornas Chaillot
Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spatlese
Hirtzberger Singerriedel Riesling Smaragd (though Alzinger Steinertal’s a close second as my dry Riesling pick)
Bernard Baudry Chinon La Croix Boissee
Robert Chevillon NSG Vaucrains
In the Loire, Clos Rougeard Les Poyeaux and for something white - Huet
In the Northern Rhone Allemand Cornas Chaillot - Gonon when I’m priced out.
From the Piedmont, Mascarello Monprivato - Because I love Mauro and drinking his wines makes me smile with fond memories.
Ghislaine Barthod Les Cras or Lafarge Volnay (vineyard to be determined)
If I did this, I could sure buy better wines than I am buying right now. (I’m looking at you DRC, Leroy, Giacosa Red labels, and others – you know who you are)
Producers immediately come to mind, but I have to think about specific wines and get back to you.
The wines I actually buy and cellar every vintage (with a few exceptions):
Baudry Chinons
Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec and/or Secs
Coudert Fleurie and Fleurie Tardive
Gonon St. Joseph
The wines I consider buying every vintage but don’t always due to budget constraints or other reasons:
Chevillon 1er Crus
Bize Savigny 1ers
Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin village bottling
Schafer-Frohlich Bockenauer Felseneck Spatlese
Willi Schaefer
