1990 was the first year I bought quite a bit of, back when the top wines were under a hundred bucks (other than DRC and Leroy, which weren’t a whole lot more). Although my taste has changed quite a bit since, I don’t remember pruney and roasted until later. What I bought drank stunningly well after release for some time (the unforgettably spherical top two Rousseau and Ponsot wines and Jadot CSJ stand out in memory, also that I never dug the 1990 DRCs, and that Leroy just took a lot more time than the others). I am not a fan of how these aged ultimately.
It’s probably just that I don’t get to drink these top wines on release these days, but the few 2020s I’ve had have seen more coarse and extracted than what I remember so long ago.
1990 ended up as somewhat of a mixed bag, but I found that the 1990 Truchot Clos de la Roche and Charmes Charmbertin was absolutely fabulous. As I said above, I expect 2020s to also be inconsistent.
So far- absolutely wonderful. Fresh, vibrant, transparent. Think 2001 with a bit of 2015 sex appeal. A real highlight for me so far has been Rouget’s Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits rouge. Most of the heavy hitters are not here yet, but at the entry level I am loving this vintage and planning to buy very heavily.
My experience with 2020 reds so far has been generally positive. Although they are sometimes a bit on the monolithic side, which is typically a red flag for me, many seem like very large scaled yet complete wines, with excellent energy underlying them and little of the roasted characteristics that I get from the 2018s.
Essentially, I think it’s too early to pass judgement on the 20s, although I agree that the 2019s so far seem to have the edge. I had a 2019 Dujac fils Chambolle Musigny last night, which I buy every vintage, and it was easily the best I’ve tasted, going back to 2010… It had something I’ve never noticed in the wine before - a gorgeous floral note with a citrus orange hint coming up behind… Difficult to describe but wonderful to find in what is a relatively simple wine. It just makes me wonder how great the Clos de la Roche must be this vintage…
