Hard to count how many cases of wine I have received over my lifetime, and I certainly buy a lot, but this is the first time I have ever received anything like this before. Usually my cases arrive in Styrofoam or cardboard layers. This was just 12 bottles wrapped up in a thick paper bag stuffed in a box and padded with additional paper. And this came all the way from California to Florida. Nothing broke, everything is fine, just seems like a remarkably high risk way of sending wine to a customer. This is a wine store that I have used for years and have probably received 50+ cases of wine from them and never once has anything ever been sent this way. In fact, I received a Magnum the same day from this retailer packed in a Styrofoam box. And have received other cases of wine this year perfectly packed in Styrofoam.
Has anybody else ever received anything like this before?
The original box had to be damaged in transit by the transporter and this is the makeshift package you got from whatever was available to repack on the way.
Now that’s brown-bagging Beaujolais the right way!
The polite anonymity works less well when you include a shot of the invoice with the logo
I would guess this was a situation where UPS/FedEx somehow destroyed the original box (spill or tore the cardboard all up or whatever) in the last steps of the trip and just threw it in whatever was handy. Like you can’t imagine any major retailer shipping in the equivalent of a hobo bag on a stick.
To your first point, that is such a classic Alfred move. He is dumb.
I never thought about the other point, that this was the shipping company repackaging the wine. I guess at the end of the day everything got to me in good shape, and I will be happy. But I will confirm from the anonymous retailer that this is not their new way of packaging wine!
I can’t imagine they shipped like this, unless they have gone to Ai controlled monkeys doing their shipping and packing lol.
I get deliveries from them locally to my locker facility, which aren’t packed in styro because it’s hand delivered a few miles by truck, but always packed nicely in regular cardboards wine boxes.
That happened to me once. Looked similar but labels were stained as a bottle had broken. I recall it was just a 3pack too. I called the winery and they sent me a new shipment and let me keep the undamaged, however stained bottles.
Yes also once from a wine merchant in Italy and very amusingly it was also Clos de la Roilette although this was a 2021 Griffe du Marquis. All were also fine other than the wax capsules cracked to varying degrees,
Maybe its instructions from the vineyard - Clos de la Roilette, shaken not stirred.
Fancy. I think you get the cardboard box when that retailer ships long distance. For local delivery that retailer just uses paper bags!
JK JK JK! Have always received my stuff from them correctly packed.
I just ordered from this exact same retailer to my in laws place in in Florida in January. Came in secure cardboard packaging that looked nothing like this. Only logical explanation is repacked in transit.
Did you notify the retailer? I’m sure they’d be at least as horrified as you. They probably spend several hundred thousand dollars with FedEx a year, and would see this as unacceptable level of service. This retailer has always done the right thing with me in case of mishaps.
I have gotten two boxes that had elements of that in the last couple of weeks. Both were repacks (into FedEx logo boxes), and both had a bottle missing and some stained labels. Both boxes came from retailers with excellent shipping practices, so I am 100% certain that FedEx dropped the boxes and had to repack them.
I had the exact same thing happen. My order from a very reputable and reliable winery showed up horribly mispacked, one bottle missing, and the other bottles stained. Obviously, the shipper broke a bottle and then repacked the remaining bottles. I contacted the winery, and they replaced the missing bottle, even though it was not their fault. Thank you, Bucklin.
