So the head of my company knows I’m a wino. She wants me to buy wine for her daughter’s Bat Mitzvah. Here’s the thing, she wants wines that the wine geek’s there will love, but something that will also please the masses. (these need to be readily available in the LA area so I can avoid shipping charges.)
I am under instructions to get:
1 1/2 case of Merlot (Up to $30/bottle.)
Not sure what to get here.
1 1/2 case of Pinot (Up to $30/bottle, could go slightly higher.)
Really need some help with this.
1 1/2 case of Chardonnay (Up to $25/bottle, but hopefully cheaper.)
1 case of Sauvignon Blanc (Up to $20/Bottle, but hopefully cheaper.)
She said I get to keep a couple bottles of each if there’s any left over.
I’m a huge fan of the Kim Crawford SP Sauvignon Blancs. Winex has it at a bit out of your price range, though. You are being redirected..." onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
San Diego Wine Co. has/had? the 2006 Liparita SB for only $6.99. I thought the wine was excellent. Which reminds me to get a case for myself. I had 4 bottles, all showed bright fuit and excellent acidity. Give them a call, 'cause they ship. This may free some money for a better Merlot, no?
There are some great choices listed above. Here are some others to ponder:
Cloudy Bay SB - at Costco for ~$18
Neyers Carneros Chardonnay
Domaine Serene Yamhill Cuvee Pinot Noir
Sawyer Cellars Rutherford Estate Merlot
How about a Cotes de Castillon like D’Aiguilhe or Clos Les Lunelles for the merlot? The style is pleasing to the New World palate. D’Aiguilhe won a merlot blind tasting among non wine geek friends of mine recently, over several respectable CA and WA merlots.
I know you said you want to avoid shipping, but 03 Lunelles is $30/bottle at Knightsbridge. At that price, the shipping is worth it. I’m sure you can save some $$ back on the white wine choices, many good ones under your limit.
For the pinot, I’d lean toward Santa Barbara pinots - the ripeness fits the masses too. Also, it becomes a conversation piece if people recognize the wineries from Sideways - you could go Hitching Post Cork Dancer or Sanford’s regular bottling.
Crowds at these gatherings rarely know good from bad and most often won’t see the labels. They are also too busy smoozing and celebrating to pay attention. Keep that in mind. I second the Foxglove. Everyone will like it. I would go to with the '07 Castle Rock RRV PN. LA Wine Co has it for $14. It says Reserve on it, which will impress anyone who might see the label. Can’t help you on the Merlot but a cheap Right Banker might be good. New Zealand SB is a good idea. I like Isabel a lot.
