I got a sixer and 4 of them were bad. The 2 are somewhere, maybe I’ll stumble onto a couple of gems in a few years, but I’m not holding my breath.
There was a big style change around 2019-2020, from classic to natural.
Agree Chantereve has bottle variation, and some can be quite lovely. the Corton Charlie is quite good though not at current pricing. i think it was just under 300 when it first came out.
But like you said it’s also a natty style producer, so you have to enjoy that style to enjoy the wines…
not to deviate but am i the only one who’s noticed that becky wasserman is now representing all of the buzzy new school burgundy (and non burg) producers?
i was surprised to see chantereves, icy liu, bastian wolber, guyot, and others all on their site.
glad that they open to representing new producers and not just the classic domaines that we love. i consider becky wasserman giving their stamp of approval as an indication of their longevity.
My experience has been similar to @Andrew_K. I found their Aligotés impressive across a pair of tastings over the last year, but that’s about it. Actually, I thought the Aligotés were straight up better wines, regardless of the price delta
Sorry, careless post.
I tried the 19 Chantreves NSG Tuyaux last year - definitely natty with a saline vinegar-y VA thing going on. It wasn’t bad but I couldn’t wrap my head around it- one sip I liked, the next I didn’t. Ultimately, it was hard to recognize as a Burgundy, or even as Pinot. Not bad, but not for me.
@Dennis_Atick, cosmopolitan that he is, and more tolerant of wine weirdness, liked this one more than I did.
Cost in 2021 was US $89. Today WS says $110 so, not ridiculous.
surpised that there is bottle variation on Chantereves Les Tuyaux, could this be a shipping thing to the US? I’ve had the wine twice in 19 and twice in 2020 and all bottles were perfect (EU sourced).
Could be due to the style change mentioned earlier around 19/20 so wouldn’t be found in what you were drinking back then.
Napa gets away with this in the short term. It doesn’t seem like it always lasts very long.
If the producer is leaning low/no sulfur and natural, the shipping could certainly be a cause. But it would be hard to pinpoint the source without a really thorough knowledge of the supply chain.
K&L is offering 2022 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits for $120 and 2021 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée “Les Suchots” for $1000.
Seems crazy, but there must be buyers.
I mean, it could be worse. What if the Euro was still worth $1.50?
There’s just so little wine. I love the HCdN as a fabulous daily drinker for $55.
I got some 2019 for $60.
I took a bottle to a Christmas party this year but it was not opened.
Still have 5, may open one next month.
Crazy prices are still to be found!
2020 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Petits Monts at the bargain price of $9500/bottle.
I mean, it was 100% allocated to French restaurants, how many bottles are even left on the open market?
Rarity doesn’t make it twice as good as LT. Drinkable in a French restaurant for 500€? Absolutely.
It doesn’t make it twice as good but makes it twice as expensive.
