I read a thread one time and someone listed off their purchases for the year, it added up to over $60k.
With the budgeting for wine thread it reminded me of something I have often wondered, what is a normal, sane, acceptable wine budget to have?
I don’t bemoan anyone for how much they spend and I know to some people this is a very personal question, but how much do you spend on wine?
I don’t expect people to really spill the beans, but I’m curious as to how much of peoples disposable income is dedicated to wine. If not a dollar amount than maybe a %?
To start, I spend about $250-$300 per month on average inclusive of wine list and allocations down from about $1k per month in my hay day.
$500 a month average over the last 5 years on CT. It could have been more before, but I did not keep total records. CT sure points out the harsh reality that I have spent way too much money on this hobby.
Last year, for the first year since I started this hobby, over 20 years ago, I sold slightly more than I bought. Friends wanted wine and I sold a little of stuff that no longer interests me in CC. A miracle. Unlikely to be repeated this year.
2014 was the lowest $ in 10 years and still a fairly inconceivable amount to the average non-geek. A decade of wine expenditures has pushed retirement years down the road.
I was watching the documentary Red Obsession this weekend and I think it was Christian Moueix who said (something like), “When I was younger I preferred sex, now that I’m older I prefer wine”. I busted up laughing. He had a few great quotes on that movie.
I think the reference is to the costs once your wife finds out, not the direct costs of another woman. This not being an enlightened / morally decayed (take your pick) country like France where it’s considered perfectly fine and grand to be carrying on outside of your marriage.
