As per our household tradition, we crack a bottle of Carlilse when the new release hits and the shipment lands.
Last night was a 2006 Sonoma Zin. Freakin’ amazing bottle for the money. Might be the best QPR to ever come out of California. Pepper, blueberries and bright acidity. Mouthfeel is enormous and shows no sign of heat. Hard to believe that I have gone through a solid case of this stuff.
Went to dinner with a friend who brought the 2005 Bennett Valley Syrah (still needs lots of time), and finished the 2004 Carlisle Vineyard Zin (opened two nights earlier) when I returned home. The Zin also needs a couple of years and was not nearly as enjoyable as the 2004 Tom Feeney Zinfandel I had on Monday night, probably my favorite Carlisle for current drinking.
Opened a Two Acres to see if I want to buy it now because I got 14 bottles allocated, 2 of them 2 acres and it makes no sense shipping wise for me to buy a case +2.
Good, not great. Passed on the Two Acres.
Having participated in verticals of several wines from Carlisle during the past three years, the Two Acres is at the top of the list (with the Montafi Zin) of wines I must buy. The 2002 and 2005 were particularly good IMHO in the tasting we did last year of all the Two acres, save one.
Sorry, 06. I just dont think its voluptuous enough. The LWC TBC had better be bigger
Zins and syrahs (I dont get any PS allocated yet) seem more up my alley. Am I wrong Tex? you tell me, Im not all that experienced with Carlisle…Ive only had about 7-8 different bottlings.
I have only had the 2003 Two Acres…and it was some time ago, and I don’t honestly remember anything about it.
The real stars of the stable are the zins for me with the syrahs a close second. I have lots of PS, but have never cracked one because of the reco’s that they need some serious years on them to be enjoyed. Knowing your tastes, I think you would like the syrahs and zins in their youth.
All of the 06 Zins I tried ranged from some to tons in the nail polish category except for the Montafi. I’m seem to be more sensitive to this than many around me though.
From the Wayback Machine…fast forward 18 months from Bill’s comments…tonite our last Feeney of the '04 vintage…still quite wonderful, if just a tad short on the finish…but every other characteristic of this Zin was an Olympic 10 if not reaching a Bo 10.
BTW, at a Mike Officer dinner a couple of yrs ago in Redondo Beach, a couple of pundits wondered of this would not last 5-8 years in pristine shape…to them, well…were I on the top of a parapet in Frawnce, I would state Monty Python-esque things to them.
Being a long time Carlisle buyer, I never liked the Two Acres much on release. Sort of tasted like a CDP, but always seemed a bit closed. So I buried them and have had the 2001, 2002 and 2004 (IIRC) in the last year and they are fantastic. Tremendous nose with great balance and medium body. Not really like anything else Mike makes, but very good with time.
P.S. Whetstone is on crack (but has beautiful manicured nails)
Two Acres is a wine that really develops very nicely as it ages. The '02 is stunning right now, and the '05 not far behind and might eventually equal the '02. I have yet to pop anything more recent, but I understand that the '08 has the potential to be the best ever.
