How many college football fans do we have on here and what do you open when your team is playing?

We typically open a bottle of champagne prior to every game when we aren’t in attendance. Auburn grad here, so it’s been tough the past few years. Curious what kind of representation we have on this board.

Gator here…just straight gin! Then I don’t care by halftime

Another Gator fan. This season, I’ve been drinking Draino while waiting for basketball season to ramp up

Gator here as well. We suck. Had to go for the brown liquid!

Hmph. Roll Tide.

Depends on when the game is on. At night, red wine. During the day, the blood of our enemies.

An SEC dominated wine message board. Interesting, lol.

There are plenty of Michigan fans. They are just in hiding this year.

I give the OP credit for admitting to being an Auburn fan.

Also a Gator and right now arsenic is tempting. Typically , Bloody Mary’s or beer if tailgating. If watching at home, I will pop whatever wine strikes my fancy at the time.

Thankfully, YTTV won’t show SEC games so I don’t have to watch the LSU death spiral! It’s cabernet and brown water until February 13, when college baseball starts! And then . . . it’s cabernet and brown water

I’m a Texas alum. My preferred drink for watching a game is Dos Equis. :metal:

In 2023 and 24, we opened bubbles for obvious reasons. Average to bad opponent was typically our “house” sparkling in something Schramsberg. Better opponents, rivalry games, and playoffs call for champagne on a proportionate to the moment scale.

That said, we live in Ann Arbor so if at a tailgate, beer. Am proud am proud that I have never seen our traditional wine and cheese crowd opened that one bottle of Caymus that is so often sitting on someone’s drink table.

Cheer up. Now that your program is free of Brian KeLLLLy, things should improve quickly.

Sighned - A Notre Dame grad

Hard to handle the what is played as football in the Ivies without major league distraction to focus attention elsewhere. No “athletic scholarships”. Ocassionally an NFL level player emerges and truly stands out. Amusing.
1982 Bordeaux approaching perfection work well while changing channels in search of a real game.

I’m a Gator as well. Lots of us here! Yeah, the Napier era has required me to self medicate a bit more than usual. I usually make some sort of tailgate worthy food on game days, often BBQ, so I usually opt for something that can stand up to it, like a zin (one of the few occasions I reach for zin anymore) or Southern Rhone.

I generally hold off on partaking while the game is on as I need to keep my wits about me so my in game texts to Ryan Day about adjustments to the offensive and defensive schemes are clear.

Afterwards, it depends on the time of day.

I dunno. Does Columbia have a football team???

I am a big Miami Hurricanes fan. Drink nothing in particular. Probably already buzzed before the game starts. Beer. Whatever wine may still be open. Maybe more hard stuff as their usual late season implosion ensues. (FWIW, I rarely watch live, record on the DVR and watch when I can speed through commercials, halftime, etc.)

(At least this year we beat the teams that matter, hehe.)

When I was an undergrad at Columbia we set the then record for most winless games at 44. Finally beat Princeton my junior year. The goalposts got torn door and went back to campus on the subway. 114th Street was closed all night. Of course, momentary blip in the history of the team.

Georgia Bulldog here.

Bad luck to drink wine at the tailgate, we actually ban it. Vodka fine, beer good, will make exception for champagne for noon games to mix for mimosas.

Wine drinking encouraged for the ride home, other than the driver.

Quality of the wine varies based on the game.

For non conference home games against directional schools or Kentucky/MIss St, an easy drinking Ca or Oregon Pinot that retails for less than $30

Auburn, Tennessee or Florida brings out a nice Peay Pomariun or Scallop Shelf or perhaps a Paul Hobbs Goldrock or Cleary

For Texas or Alabama, a Realm Bard or maybe a Paul Hobbs Dr Crane

SEC Championship, Realm Dr Crane, Antica Terra Botanica

National Championship, had 2004 Lafite when we beat Alabama and Harlan Estate when we beat TCU.

And for the last three categories, always have some $25 wine in case we happen to lose! Don’t drink the good stuff unless we win!

I still enjoy watching football played by young athletes employed by colleges and universities and I root for Michigan despite the fact that it is no longer “college football.”

Can’t say that my wine drinking behavior is influenced at all by the games. I’m usually not drinking between 1 and 5 anyway. If it’s an evening game, whatever is open.

Should I cross-post this in the getting old or curmudgeon threads?
