How Good Is Forman's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon?

I bought on AG’s recommendation that it is one of the wines of vintage. (I’ve bought since the 2007 vintage.) Has anyone had Ric Forman’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon?

I’m interested to know this as well, never had a Forman. But why are you asking now, after you already bought the wine…?

Dare I say it? I trust AG’s palate. Just wondering what others might think.

Tanzer likes it, 94+

Michael…From where did you purchase?

This thread interested me, so I checked out recent vintages of Forman cab on CT. Looks like they consistently receive high critic scores, but I would classify the actual consumer scores as just “good” (typically low 90’s). Also, on the Forman website, I don’t see anywhere to purchase or even join a mailing list???

AG got it right with the 09 Seavey. We tasted it last week and it was very good. The note on this is something else. 98 or 94 it sounds like a very good wine and if you like Cab in a more understated, balanced package then this should fit the bill.

I sent an email from their website under the Visit section and Margaret called me back within 2 hours. They have this and the 09 at the winery. So much for not buying wine after my trip ! Margeret was very nice and invited me to visit next time we are in Napa.

I am going to give the 09 a whirl first when they arrive around t-day time.

Tasting there tomorrow. Will let y’all know.

Michael:

IMO, the 2010 Forman Cab is excellent, amongst the best of the last several years. My wife and I tasted it in April and bought several while we were visiting. We also tasted the '09, which I would also highly recommend. I think Forman is one of the best Cabs at that price point, and they age well for several years. We had a 1996 Forman Merlot a few months ago, and it was still going strong!

Scott, regarding getting in contact with Forman, they are a very small operation, with only a few people there. Ric handles most of the wine-making, and Margaret Harre runs the tasting room. The best way to reach them is via their website email or phone number. You are welcome to use my name when you leave a message for Margaret, as we have known her for several years. They may be busy with harvest, but they will get back to you. The winery is a combination vineyard/winery/residence. A very cool visit!

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Ed

Justin- not sure you have the time but if you do you should try and connect with Bob Bressler. I’m opening his 09 tomorrow night. His 07 was one of the top wines in our final dinner night against some big boys. I think his wine, Forman and Seavey are of similiar quality and style.

Let us know how the trip goes. Are you making it up to Fairchild ?

Fred, we had a cancellation today and I might try to contact Bressler. How did you contact them?

we can compare notes on the 2009. I’m opening up one tonight.

The difference in scores often happens with wines that can age a bit (with consumers drinking too soon), and Forman would seem to fit that bill. I’ll try to grab a few to squirrel away. '10 was a great year for Napa Cabs anyway.

The only Forman I’ve had was the 99’ and I just had it recently. . . I absolutely fell in love and it stood out among a pretty good lineup at that particular tasting.

Does anyone know what the winery price is?

Thanks, Ed. I’m always fascinated by the possibility of a world class wine flying under the radar because it isn’t perceived as being sexy and hyped as being exclusive.

regular retail- $ 85

Justin- i sent you a pm on EBOB with bressler email and phone

Ric’s cabernets are among my favorites in California. I have not tried the '10 yet (I think the youngest I have is the '06), but they are (IMNSHO) stellar wines that fit precisely in my wheelhouse. I am currently regularly drinking my stashs of the '90s, '91s. '94s and '96s, all of which are showing very, very well.

Or, stay away, particularly from the older wines, at $40-75 at auction, they are a terrible deal [stirthepothal.gif]

Just a quick update regarding my post above:

We tasted at the winery yesterday. The 09 and 10 are both fantastic wines! The scores are well-deserved. The 09 was a bit more open and approachable early on, but the 2010 just needed some air. Both were just opened when we tasted them. Both wines are quite tannic, but they are appropriate, with nothing out of balance. I thought that the 2010 had a broader mouthfeel, and a bit more acid in the mix, after it had about an hour of air. I went back and forth, but I think I liked the 2010 better…no, maybe it was the 2009…no, it was the 2010.

Great wines and at a great price. Of note, Margaret said that the wine is going to be sold more on a mailing list platform in the future. So, likely less wine will be available through retail, as I was used to seeing quite often in Chicago area.
