Yesterday, I received the test strips and today, about half an hour ago I did the test.
For full transparency, below is a link to the PDF with the information on the test and the substances it uses to test for sensitivity.
My results can be summarized as follows:
I have heartburn now
I never get heartburn. One of these strips gave me heartburn. It wasn’t immediate but it steadily grew.
Specific results:
- Strip 1: Thiourea - Definitely bitter but not strong
- Strip 2: Control - no flavor
- Strip 3: Sodium Benzoate - Very lightly salty
- Strip 4: PTC (Phenylthiourea) - Fully bitter, not unbearably strong at first but with a lingering aftertaste that creeps up on you. Longer than the longest finish in the worst possible way. Awful.
Therefore, since I could taste all three, the official result is that:
I am a Dominant Supertaster
Note:
Since Thiourea and PTC (Phenylthiourea) are both tied to the TAS2R38 gene, and my genetic test (which I had forgotten about but just checked) shows that I have a GG Genotype on that area of Chromosome 7, then it is not surprising that I can taste both since I know for a fact that I am predisposed to it.
For the record, beyond normal palate swings, my favorite wines are Mosel Rieslings, Barolo and Albariño. But I think I have a fairly wide palate, save that I do not like overextracted or overripe anything and have been fairly vocal about it when encountering wines like that. I am especially hostile to overripe Pinot Noir. I’m also hostile to Gewürztraminer in any form.
I’ll also drink IPAs unless they’re some sort of hops science experiment. I am not generally a hot tea guy (but I’ll drink the Chinese ones at Chinese restaurants.)
The heartburn which I had when starting to write this note lingers on though it has abated a little
