Hot Doug's aka The Encased Meat Emporium - Chicago

During the busy HDH auction weekend John Liotta and I were able to sneak away on Friday afternoon and make our way over to Hot Doug’s.

We arrived at about 11:45am and had to wait in line for about 1.5 hours until we were able to order.

Being as this was my first time and John’s second we wanted to try as many things as possible. We had some more dogs than whats pictured. All of the dogs were great, except for the Smoked Apple Chicken Sausage, just a touch sweet for me (and John) but 9 outta 10 aint bad. Also the duck fat fries were good, but not great as i was expecting.

I would definitely make a return visit to Hot Doug’s.

The Menu

Foie Gras and Sauternes Duck Sausage with Truffle Aioli, Foie Gras Mousse and Sel Gris

Smoked Apple Chicken Sausage with Spicy Citrus-Apple Salsa and Sartori Raspberry Cheese

Duck Fat Fries

The Salma Hayek
(formerly the Madonna, the Raquel Welch and the Ann-Margret)
Andouille Sausage: Mighty, mighty, mighty hot!

The Elvis
Polish Sausage: Smoked and savory - just like the King.

Chicago-Style Hot Dog with all the trimmings

Absolutely revolting, but in a good way.

There are no finer words that “encased meats”, my friend.

Deliciously dangerously disgusting. I can’t wait to stop in there when I’m in Chicago.

That is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

Michel, not pictured was one of the favorites of the afternoon…it was on the “special” menu, so if they have it make sure to get it.

Portuguese Linguica with Saffron Rouille and 1-Year Manchego Cheese

Love me some Hot Doug’s

Is there any day/time to avoid a long wait?

Friday and Saturday they offer Duck Fat Fries and are therefore more busy. Avoid 1130-200PM on those days. Otherwise, like any place if you get there after the lunch rush there is less wait. I think the hours are something like 1030-430 . . .

Usually early in the week right around opening up to about 45 minutes it’s line free. Anything after that it’s a crap shoot.
