Looks like I’ll be heading to HK in January. A couple of questions -
So, I’ve been to Tokyo once before (only trip to Asia). It was in 2001 when I was younger (obviously) and less aware of food, service, and general travel greatness and experiences.
I have to fly Delta/Skyteam as I am a PM on Delta and the benefits are a lot better for me as I’m a larger/taller guy. Is there a way to get to HK that I’m missing? I’m flying out of ATL. I seemingly have to connect in Tokyo (if on DL) or Seoul (Korean Air). Just wondering if there is a better option out there, or if there is a specific route with a kickass plane, etc… I’m most likely going to be flying coach/economy comfort but will be checking on a first class upgrade.
I’ll have the chance for some extra days. Question is where if anywhere do I go other than HK. I know there are multiple options as that’s a long way to go for just a few days.
I used my American miles to fly first class on Cathay Pacific and it was the single best use of miles that I have ever done. Using United miles for Singapore Airlines was my next best.
period… just eat and eat and eat… the good food is endless…
nothin’ much else to do that’s overly interesting. shopping… that’s the other thing if it interests you.
8 DAYS in HK… wow… i hope you have work or some other obligations… b/c 8 days as a tourist in HK is hella boring… 3 days max, and that’s including a day to Macau… maybe a 4th to HK Disney.
I flew Korean Air from Atlanta to Seoul and it was a good flight (for a 12 hour flight). I was actually impressed with the leg room and ability to recline my seat pretty far back (I was in coach).
The only other place I went while I was in Hong Kong was Macau and it was great. It was only an hour ferry ride away from HK. Of course the main attractions there are casinos, so if that doesn’t interest you then it might not be a trip for you. They also have a bungee swing there that was pretty incredible if you want a little rush. http://onestep4ward.com/5-bungee-jumps-world/
You can easily spend 4 days in Shanghai. I like art and there’s a lot of good museums in the city. You could consider taking the fast train to Suzhou (35 min) or Nanjing (2 hours?) for a day trip.
You may want to check to see if you can get a reservation to the Ultraviolet restaurant in Shanghai for one of the days you’re there - you can check online. It is simply awesome, and expensive. Lunch / dinner at their regular restaurant Mr and Mrs Bund is also great.
I looked a while back but nothing available…plus it was $825 USD which is just crazy IMHO. I realize the experience, etc… but I’d rather spend my $ at Robuchon in Vegas when I’ll be there towards the end of Jan. $400-$500 and I’d do it w/o question, but $800+ is crazy.
We are going to check out this place in Hong Kong. Not expensive but can be crowded. Food is supposedly first rate. Cantonese cuisine. Not haute cuisine however. I would love to hear what others might say who have been there. Sounds like a name made up by those folks who were fired over that jet liner crash in SF. The one in downtown Hong Kong is what we are looking at.
