I thought everyone would get a kick out of the response I received when asking for a tasting at a cult Napa winery whose list I was added to. When asking to do a tasting of their several wines to learn about the wines before purchasing at $750 a bottle I was told “We hoped elevating you to the front of our years-long waitlist would allow you to feel proud to begin purchasing.” - And I was denied a $3000 tasting.
I’m going to go cry in my corner for a minute before I then go give my hard earned money to a winery that doesn’t have an ego problem…
Their response tells me everything I would need to know. They don’t care about you. They’re not interested in educating you about their wine or promoting enthusiasm for their product and they act as though you’re not-insignificant amount of money is actually quite insignificant. My wife adds, “so nice of them to do you such a favor!”
To quote the great lyricist, Ariana Grande, “thank you, next! “
They may or may not have an ego problem, but this comment certainly indicates that they think YOU have an ego problem to which they are happy to market.
But, I dropped all high dollar Cali lists years ago in a magnanimous gesture of allowing the elevation of others to demonstrate their pride of purchasing.
Well, that and my storage was full beyond my capacity to consume; but I prefer to think of it as being generous to others.
I didn’t think it would be right to name names…as to let others choose their opinions about wineries and all…
While this is a very real email, and a very real quote, it was meant to be a laugh at the arrogance of the wineries in Napa who need business and their way of ‘attracting’ clients. I am in no way ‘worthy’ of ‘bumping up a list’ which just shows a winery that would like anyone to buy that can…without trying to work to sell…
