Help with U.S Itinerary

I don’t think MoMA is quite as essential as the other two. It’s a great museum, but there are several other NY museums that have very good modern art collections as well, while there’s nothing else remotely comparable to the Met or the AMNH in NYC. You could conceivably skip MoMA on a first trip to NYC, but you can’t skip the Met.

OTOH, MoMA has the benefit of being centrally located in Midtown and attached to an excellent restaurant.

The Met is unmissable. Even better than the Museum of Sex!

You can skip the MoNH, rent Night at the Museum and stop by the Field Museum here in Chicago. [drinkers.gif]

Jeremy; You have gotten some great tips so far and I think you will be amazed at the number of Berserkers who would love to drink with you. The generosity of Berserkers to travelers is always amazing. As a matter of fact, I hope I can some how swing an opportunity you meet you while you are in LA. Depending on your schedule, Washington D.C is a great place to visit but I really can’t imagine getting Blair Curtis to behave. Vancouver is stunning and the Berserkers up there are crazy generous!

Have a great trip!

Cheers!

One man’s opinion.

Street food: Halal Guys http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-halal-guys-new-york-2

Pizza: Lobardi’s http://www.firstpizza.com/

Times Square: worth walking through as an international visitor. It’s not like you’d go to Peru and skip Machu Picchu. Take a picture with the Naked Cowboy and move along. Don’t eat there.

Lodging: proximity to Grand Central is nice. For a three bedroom you’re probably looking at east side or west side. Watch out for “rental by owner” sites - lots of scams.

Fine dining: Gramercy Tavern http://www.gramercytavern.com/

Modern art: MOMA http://www.moma.org/

All other art: Met http://www.metmuseum.org/

As Howard wrote, you must go and see a Yankees or mets game and eat a giant pretzel!

If you want to do a dinner in la, plenty of us would be happy to join

Agreed. But there is still a good dive bar on 44th, on the first block east of Broadway - Jimmy’s Corner. Owned by a couple who are almost always there. Jimmy Glenn is a former boxing trainer and owner of a former boxing gym at 42d and Broadway. The walls are covered with boxing memorabilia. Strong lights and weak drinks, but boxers often stop by in tribute.

Exciting news! Will have to start exercising my liver so I can stay respectably close in the glass count. Will let Jerry know! PM sent! Cellar will be unlocked. Will try and remember to feed the cobras that live in it before the visit.

When my daughter was a teenager, the one restaurant she wanted to go to in NY was Serendipity 3 (not sure if it was in a teen movie or what). http://www.serendipity3.com/ Not high cuisine, but fun for kids.
How old are your kids? Will you be taking them to Disneyland in LA?

I used to work around the corner. If you’re going to submit yourself to the Dylan’s Candy Bar/Serendipity experience, do yourself a favor and go off peak. Usually there are people standing outside waiting for Dylan’s to open at 10 and they’re the same people waiting for a table at Serendipity come 12:30. Hit Dylan’s during lunch around 1 then get a late lunch at Serendipity. Check the hours however, they do have a closing period between lunch and evening service.

Jeremy

Just let us know when you will be here. And Alan said his cellar is unlocked so get ready for some good wines. I’ll see if I can find something worthy.

This might seem crazy, but it is not. Flights to and from Tampa are usually pretty cheap, and hotels there aren’t bad either. It’s worth going for one evening to have an amazing experience at Bern’s. seriously.

Lots of good suggestions. If you’re looking to rent a 3 bedroom apartment you might try homeaway or vrbo.

Also, if Manhattan pricing is more than you’re willing to pay you might consider a place on the Waterfront here in Jersey City. It’s a short PATH train or ferry ride into Manhattan from here. The Hyatt is the best hotel but it looks like there are apartments for rent as well:

Another vote for an offline while you’re here.

If you’re a fan of natural/organic wine Racines is a must visit.

Definitely go to either Katz’s or Carnegie Deli to see what old school Jewish deli is like.

Maison Kayser for the best baguettes, Millefeuille for the best croissants.

Marea is one of my favorite high end restaurants - get the fusilli with octopus and bone marrow. Their prix fixe lunch is a bargain.

Per Se or Masa for really expensive high end (I still haven’t been). One of the Momofukus would be a good visit.

How did I miss this thread until now??? [scratch.gif]

Jeremy - can’t wait to see you and your family here in Vancouver…we will spend the next 6 months planning something epic!!!

(BTW, just reading Repast edition 4 right now…awesome writing and photos as usual! The experiences you capture and share are amazing. I want to be you when I grow up [wink.gif] )

See you soon,

Blair

LOL - Marshall, you are a funny man [highfive.gif] .

We really enjoyed your visit here - hope to see you again soon! [cheers.gif]
