It works well for me, because I think about drinking regions rather than varieties. For example, my intention is rarely to drink a Pinot Noir, but I would crave a Burgundy. If I think about pairing something with a particular meal (for example a “lighter red”) I would first think through potential regions (e.g. Jura, Burgundy, Beaujolais, California) and decide on that before looking for a suitable wine. Your drinking/pairing habits might be different, of course.
