Has the Oura Ring ruined wine drinking for anyone else?

Come on, Sr Counsel is now on a budget!!! Those weeknights with Krug and caviar, while billing, are a thing of the past!

I’m not into the wearable health trackers but I know the consumption levels aren’t great for health or body shape. Been trying to cut back on weekday consumption but the work dinners are tough!

I for sure feel a difference in sleep with zero consumption. Although, it seems to be the second night after a big night where I see the difference.

If I do it’s not unusual to have some amazing sleep…in the form of a nap

I feel the same about sleep trackers, but my wife and I within the last few months have taken a legitimate look at our health and the changes we have made are noticeable.

I went from going to sleep whenever I felt like it to pretty strict 10pm bedtime. It helps that there is no NBA or NFL to watch during the week. I went from multiple shitty meals per week ( I love fast food ) to cutting it out almost entirely. I don’t eat past 7-7:30 pm.

I haven’t had any liquor in two months save for two small pours on special occasions. Sticking to wine, and I have cut out Monday-Thursday drinking. That has been tough.

And finally we have added a trainer to the mix after many years on my part of being a couch potato.

Did I mention I turn 50 soon ?

I won’t get away from my old routine entirely, but these modifications have been fairly easy, and I have noticed a difference in my health and energy levels. And we aren’t afraid to deviate if we feel like it, but my will power is better now on all fronts. It helps that my wife and I are both doing this together so we can encourage each other.

Will check back in in 3-6 months and see if we are still keeping up with it.

Best of luck Pat, the best changes are the ones you can easily stick with.

This book is a fantastic read and I’ve changed some of my sleep-related behaviors since reading it:

Let’s say a couple splits a bottle a night and they would like to cut back for sleep/health reasons. Which would have more benefit: skipping every other night or drinking half as much every night?

No professional qualifications here but everything I’ve read have seems generally to have said that there are two things bad for your health - drinking more overall and more frequent binge events, and one thing that is also bad for your sleep - drinking later in the evening.

The two options you present both have you drinking the same amount overall, so would be neutral on that factor. The second option provides for a lower peak consumption on any given night, so less “binging,” and thus would seem to be better for you, except I’d think it to be a minimal difference since splitting a bottle isn’t exactly “binging” (depending I suppose on how evenly the bottle is split and the physiology of each half of the couple). But doing either with last sip at 6:30 is likely to have a big difference at least in terms of sleep compared to last sip at 9:30.

So Oura ring generally

Cons

  • May reduce wine consumption

Pros

  • ?

How do people like it? Useful tracking? Better than Apple Watch/fitbit etc?

Oura doesn’t necessarily reduce my consumption. It just changed when I drank wine. We also have young kids so we eat dinner at 5-5:30pm anyway. Wine from 4:30-7:30 or 8:00 admittedly works very well with our schedule. The other major change I made with it was to reduce screen time later in the evening. I saw how much that impacted deep sleep.

I’m biased as noted above but pros to note would be:

  1. Much longer battery life than Apple Watch - ~4-5 days typically
  2. Sleep/heart rate/body temp tracking daily in addition to steps, etc.
  3. lightweight and simple
  4. Nice fitness integrations for workout tracking (Strava)

Cons:

  1. No userface so have to reference phone
  2. Wearing another ring, although possibly in lieu of wedding ring, but also maybe an extra. I wear mine on my right ring finger in addition to my wedding ring on my left hand. Some people prefer the ring form factor because they like to wear nice watches instead of an Apple Watch. I ocassionally do too and it’s nice to still track heart rate and steps via the Oura Ring.
  3. Shame of knowing how terrible you slept/feel after big nights out.

I also wear an Apple Watch most days with mine. They sync on Apple Health data like steps, but I charge the watch at night. Worthless for sleep tracking as a result. I do endurance running so I like the userface of the watch for pacing during runs, but the Oura+Strava provides great lap data and heart rate data post-run.

I have an Apple Watch, a Garmin Fenix 6 for mountain biking, and the Oura. I use the Oura ring daily. I rarely use the Apple Watch anymore. I wear the Oura on my right index finger during the day, left at night. I shower with it. I’m a surgeon, so on office days, I use alcohol gel 30+ times a day, and it does just fine with that abuse.

I’d add to the “Pros” category:

  1. Best algorithms for sleep and readiness
  2. Clear explanations and suggestions for improvements when scores are affected.

… and here I am on my iPhone at bedtime, another confirmed sleep killer.

I don’t and won’t have a fitness tracker. At my age, all I want to do is if wake up in the morning. That is good enough for me.

Link didn’t work for me. Entered my email and received nothing.

It gets added as a coupon code at checkout. If you prefer, you can DM me your email and I can have a manual referral email sent! It has worked for several other people.
