I opened up an 05 Larcis Ducasse tonight. It needed a couple of hours to come around.
PNP. Deep crimson and black color. No signs of age. Currant, boysenberry, vanilla and spice on the nose. Tart, firm and gritty palate, dusty tannins and juicy finish. Seems over oaked, but I’ll let it sit for an hour.
Update after 2 hours. Still tannic for a right banker, but the palate definitely improved with air, the oak was less noticeable and drying while the texture loosened up and fleshed out.
Can’t believe I forgot this: 2005 Ferriere about a week ago, absolutely slamming. Super floral and some really nice tertiary development. Just awesome.
I had a 2005 Tertre Roteboeuf in the last days of 2022, and my impression was that it was still young, headlined by a battle between the fruit and mouth-drying tannins to see which would prevail.
Pichon 05 a few years ago was too closed for me. I sold all of my Valandraud 05 about 5 years ago because of severe disappointment with the way it developed. But Clos Fourtet 05 was my wine of the year two years ago. I am not touching slow developers like Montrose or LLC, not even for science. Surprisingly, lower level wines like Domaine de l’A 05 or Petite Eglise 05 are really drinking well even now. I am not mentioning the many mid-level Margaux wines that I have drank with immense satisfaction in the last 8 years. Remarkable vintage for Margaux.
