I have a really high tolerance for TCA, but sometimes I’ll notice it in the form of muted fruit.
Just popped (as in 15 min ago) a half of the Mugnier 2006 Marechale. My first Mugnier, so I don’t really have anything to compare it to.
It smells rich, but it’s a bit off-- it comes off with more oak and heat than I normally like in my burg, and there’s -zero- fruit when you taste it-- it’s all tannin.
Really odd for a 2006. I don’t have any familiarity with the producer, so is this corked? I bought it at Burgundy Wine Co, so if its corked I can easily return it.
If you’re not picking up TCA, I think it will be impossible for anyone to diagnosis the wine remotely. I’d let it breath a while and see if some fruit doesn’t emerge.
There should certainly be fruit on the palate; when I last tasted this it struck me as quite a refined, reasonably fruit-driven Nuits. I suppose it is possible that it has closed up a bit (my bottles are waiting in the cellar until they are at least ten so I don’t pop them when not showing well) and 2006 is a somewhat tough vintage, but fruit, man, fruit, that’s what we’d expect! Give it a good shake in a decanter and see if that opens it up a bit.
My girlfriend doesn’t pick up corkiness either, but agrees the wine is bad. It’s beyond just “closed down”, its completely without pleasure. It’s profoundly tannic- if anything, it comes out on the rustic side of NSG, almost like a bad Fixin. That’s totally unlike what I expected going in.
Oh well. I’ll try it again tomorrow and see if it’s come around. After 3 hours of air tonight, it’s just getting deader and deader.
