Great Idea for a Tasting

At my monthly Cru tasting we were treated with wines sourced from two member cellars. The two hosts were allowed access to the other’s cellars and could pick out any six wines with very few exceptions. Neither host knew what the other had chosen and all were served blind.

First Flight

  1. 1985 Silver Oak
  2. 1990 Cos d’Estournel
  3. 1994 Guigal “La Landonne”
  4. 1998 Schrader “Gaudeamus Vineyard” Cabernet
  5. 1994 Harlan Estate Cabernet
  6. 2002 Shafer “Hillside Select” Cabernet

Favorite: Harland
Second Favorite: La Landonne

Second Flight

  1. 1998 Penfolds Grange
  2. 2001 Penfolds Grange
  3. 2011 Clos Erasmus Laurel
  4. 2008 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux
  5. 2007 Mollydooker Velvet Glove
  6. 2009 Shafer Relentless

Favorite: Cayuse
Second Favorite: Velvet Glove

The owner of the first flight missed almost all of the wines from his own cellar.
This was a great idea and we should do it more often. Gives you an excuse to try wines from your cellar that you keep putting off waiting for the right occasion.

That takes guts.

WOW.

Amazing!!

curious why the second flight had a couple of Grange… along with a Shafer Relentless??

This is a great idea. Im a strong advocate of blind tastings and a member of a group thats been doing this since 89. Id love to use this theme amongst some of our members, especially one in particular who has thousands of cases of a lot of high end wines in addition to thousands of cases of just really great wines. I`d gladly trade my cellar selections with his, with a few exceptions of course.
