It’s like the posterizing dunk in real life and then the replay with angles…
Francois and others. What are your thoughts on 1959? Interestingly, I had not tasted it until a few years ago, when a friend that is extremely into d’Yquem brought it two or three times to tastings over a couple of years. I have to say it was outstanding each time, and it seems to be a vintage that doesn’t get mentioned as often as other heralded vintages.
Definitely agree with the lovers of 2001. It may or may not rival the best over time, but there’s no doubting it’s a fantastic vintage.
So, I’ll let my wife know her choice of getting me a ‘75 was one of the best wine decisions she’s ever made. Not that it was based on the wine, just my birth year and she knows I like d’ Yquem. l’ll just be biased there. Rounding out a top 3 based on what I’ve had, I throw in the '01 and the '90.
Brad,
The most recent 1959 Yquem :
This wine is first of all a color, as rich and deep as the alcohol that we will drink just now. It is then an intoxicating perfume, diabolical, of an infinite charm. Finally on the palate there is both a nice sweetness but especially an extraordinary acidulous freshness. We eat the grapes. This wine is a perfect Sauternes. Glorious, accessible, it is only pleasure and leaves an indelible mark in the mouth.
Another one : Its color is dark amber with golden notes. It pleasantly combines greasy and sweet notes with evocations of tea of a Yquem become dry. This double direction is pleasant.
Another one : the Château d’Yquem 1959 is a marvel. But how to translate his perfection. He is at a stage of maturity where everything smiles on him. Who could give him an age, and who could say he is old? Because he reaches such a form of achievement that he is there, stretching out his arms, ready to love us. It is very close to the most perfect form of Yquem. But Yquem is so multifaceted that he has perfections at all ages. I have a soft spot for this expression still marked by youth.
In another dinner with crazy wines, my ranking will please you : 1 – Yquem 1959, 2 – Montrachet DRC 1999, 3 – champagne Veuve Clicquot 1949, 4 – Montrachet Ramonet 1989, 5 – Yquem 1949. 6 – Montrachet Leflaive 1999.
It seems that I love Yquem 1959, effectively not enough mentioned among the greatest Yquem but who is really among the greatest.
Just had a half of the 01 over 4 days. As my first bottle, showed something different each night, but what was consistent was the absolute seamless quality when it hit your mouth. It just became your mouth, like a second skin. Sublime…though this bottle was maybe just a shade less amazing than my perfect first. Call it 98+, since it was still kinda developing even after 4 days.
