Cool. Thanks, Chris. ![]()
Both my wife and I have been loving your Grassls ever since we purchased them last year. Thank you for the great glassware!

FWIW (zilch) I am totally satisfied with the explanation and wish to thank Chris for the great deals he extends to us Berserkers on BD. These are by far my favorite glasses and I have experience with every major brand. I know Zalto fans are likely to disagree and that is fine with me.

I think a crew of 5 can create a stem every 6 minutes, plus/minus a minute - so we get about 10/12 created an hour and roughly 60% QC pass rate. Those that fail QC go right back into the kiln/furnace so there is no loss or waste.
I think, but will ask and confirm, but, think it takes about 1000 âblowsâ to be able to reliably make a glass. So, thatâs what separates an apprentice from a production worker.
I was WAY wrongâŠ
Due to the heat and the pace (hot glass is only workable for a short window) a crew can only work about 40 min / hour before fatigue sets in.
But, they are able to create a single glass every 35 seconds.
just a wee bit faster than what Iâd obviously mis-remembered.
Hand-crafted glassware, collectible wines, and money altogether weave an unsolvable entanglement of otherwise-separate OCD tendencies.
Maybe, the home mortgage business was not SO bad.
Great comment and super content for this thread, Victor. ![]()
As the weights of stems seem to be of interest and because I likely have more in my own cabinet of varying types than the rest of you doâŠhere are some results from a reasonable sample size of about 40 open glasses.
Iâm 99% confident Glasvin is mouth-blown so the only machine-made stem in the mix would be Gabrielâs âGlasâ glass which is demonstrably heavier, especially relative to its sibling. The remainder of the glasses in the lineup appear to be pretty tight in their ranges. Iâve often attempted to give folks a metric to know what a gram feels like.
US Penny - 1g
US Dime - 2g
US Nickel - 4g
US Quarter - 5g
The above assumes modern production metallic blends BTW, no clue what a quarter with silver in it would weigh.
Frankly, I have a suspicion some may be surprised at the weight of Zaltoâs line vs. the others as they are often considered the definitive âlight-weightâ of the space.
Gabriel Gold - 91, 93 grams
Gabriel Glas Machine - 150, 144 grams. *For those not familiar, GGâs stem is a single type or design but they make one from mouth-blown workers and one from machines
Glasvin (original series?) 91, 94 grams
Zalto Bordeaux - 133, 118, 117, 122, 124
Zalto Burgundy - 113, 113, 118, 122, 119
Zalto White - 78, 87, 88, 84
Zalto Champagne - 82, 84, 80, 88
Zalto Universal - 112, 115, 116, 120, 104
Of my line, only the MineralitĂ© is âgen 1â, the remainder are multi-generational
Grassl Mineralité - 77,75, 80, 82, 83, 78
Liberté - 77, 80, 83, 87, 86, 86, 89, 79, 88
1855 - 88, 93, 101, 103, 102, 110, 109
Cru - 90, 90, 94, 101, 100, 107, 106
Elemental Line
Versatile (Tasting Glass) - 99, 95, 104, 108, 103, 100
Champagne - 90, 91, 91, 94, 95, 89
I ordered my MineralitĂ© last BD and my wife is often actually too nervous to use them because she thinks sheâll break them due to how light/delicate they feel. I completely love them as is, but she wouldnât mind a touch more weight/durability. Either way, weâll be stocking up on the rest of the collection this BD if theyâre offered again!
+1. Iâm hoping for a BD offer, as well. Of last yearâs order of 6 Cru, 4 Liberte, and 4 Mineralite, all have survived except 2 Mineralite, both of which were completely my fault; looking forward to replacing them, and beefing-up other holdings, too.
My sole remaining 1855 is 89 grams. Iâve broken two, one a dogâs tail and itâs replacement a snap from the dishwasher tray.
Will replace them at some point. Will be curious to see if I can tell the difference.
They will be sold on WB DayâŠ
Chris
You should put a decanter in WBdayâŠ
Travis
The decanter and the Elemental carafe will be offered.
Bought two 1855s last BDâlove themâand will consider it a huge achievement if I make it a year without breaking. Donât think they are any more fragile than âregularâ glasses but they are so thin it messes with my head and just makes me and my wife assume we are living on borrowed time.
Canât wait to re-up on BD.
Big fan of the decanter.
Huge fan of the 1855!!! My perfect glass!
Canât wait. I want a few burgundy and need a few 1855s.
Iâve had Zalto Bordeaux, Zalto Universal, GGG, 1855, Grasl Burg, Grasl Mineralite, reidel somm series Bordeaux and burg, among others.
Grasl 1855 are wonderful. Iâve stopped my search for the best new glass. I liked Zalto Bordeaux, but found them less durable than the lighter 1855. I also personally find the 1855 performs better than Zalto uni and GGG.
These are really nice, very light classy glasses. Big fan, and Iâve never had a complaint at home. Iâve also had a very fun âthat is a sexy glass of wineâ from a guest. These are really fine glasses.
I should add that I wash mine every night in the dishwasher and have had zero breaks in the dishwasher that werenât from either bad placement and getting slammed against the roof, or having a knife whack the bowl (theyâre not allowed on the bottom, dammit!).
They break if you torque the stem while hand washing. Just put them in the dish washer and fire it up. They handle it amazingly well. Iâve washed mine hundreds of times.
Best wine decanter I have ever bought. I have 2, and a spare still in the box just in caseâŠsounds like I may need a 4th!
personal story: I just weighed my 6 Cru glasses: they ranged from 88.5 g to 104 g. I could not discern any difference between those two extremes in my hand.
Hi Chris, do you still offer the sampler kit? Seems like something fun to try.
