Hello, All. I just received an email from one of my favorite in the state, Grand Vin Wine Merchants, just outside of Olympia, WA. They’re offering a mystery case of sorts at what appears to be a very significant discount. Now, I clearly anticipate it’s full of wines they can’t sell with a gen or two mixed in, but I’m hard-pressed to imagine a very reputable retailer would risk their reputation selling a case of garbage. Here’s the email:
*We had great success with these mystery cases in the past, so we dug back through our list and found a new selection of wines that are delicious and great values, perfect for sharing in the coming weeks as people gather for celebrations during the holidays. * Each case contains 12 bottles of various wines. You get some reds, some whites, something sweet for dessert, and best of all you get a great deal!
*The average retail for these cases is $359.00, but we are offering them to you at only $159.99 ($13.33/bottle!) * There aren’t many cases left, and they can be ready for pickup, just give us a one-day notice. First come, first served, and a nice mix for your Thanksgiving gathering…!
Has anyone here bought one of these in the past? How was it? This is a pretty steep total discount it would appear, so I’m intrigued. TIA!
I didn’t get the email, but for $160/case I’m intrigued. I feel like we could scan their total inventory sorted starting at lowest price and get a decent picture of what’s likely to be in there.
Bothers me when they use the term “there aren’t many cases left” when you just received the message. Am supposed to feel special yet I am not part of the first go-round!! Really?? Should state “very few cases available”…
Pet peeve…however have ordered from Grand Vin with good results.
It is only a good deal if you need the wine. Do you really need more cellar defenders? And Berserker Day is coming where you actually know what is in the case.
An interesting offer, but I would keep expectations low. These average out to $30 wines at full retail and I’m guessing that those bottles with a higher value than that are a) slow sellers and/over overpriced, and b) being offset by bottles that normally sell in the $10 - $20 range.
Would be more interesting if they were higher-end wines with the same percentage discount.
Good thoughts, Chris and James. As said above, I think I’m “taking one for the team” and plan to have fun with it. This crew drinks a LOT of wine during the holidays, so they’ll certainly get consumed.
On one hand, this is a case of wines I’ve never heard of (save the Rieussec second) and all of them with some age, so that’s exciting. On the other hand, how many of these are going to be over the hill?
Fair question as I don’t know any of these wines either and all they do seem to have plenty of age. I’m really looking forward to the tasting notes on these .
