Goodness me, my first Cavas de Weinert Gran Vino!

TN: `02 Cavas de Weinert Gran Vino Mendoza.

Blend of Cab Sauv, Malbec and Merlot. Highly regarded as an old world producer, this wine has been produced since 1977.

14.5% alc, Lot 3, $28 Cdn. Opened and decanted one hour, dry cork. No sediment noted.

Color. Dull ruby-red, watery strawberry rim. No sign of age!

Nose. Complex, earthy, herbal, some oak still, cherry, not much change over 2 hrs or a day later.

Initial entry thoughts. Very much old world in style, soft tannins, cherry, earthy. Good acidity and balance, long black fruit finish. “Claret lovers will appreciate this” from other side of the table. Cannot figure out how I have never tasted this wine before.
Not many like this these days from Argentina, went well with humus and NY steak. Buy more tomorrow!

Bob sounds tasty!

The old 1970’s malbecs and cabs that I bought from a local Atlanta retailer in the early 90’s were delicious.
We were paying $25 for perfectly aged cab and malbec.
I thought I was in heaven.
Then they became popular and the price climbed. Older vintages were more difficult to find.

Weinert is a great address in Argentina.
Thanks for the note.

I have just opened my first bottle of the `03 vintage, usual blend of CS, Malbec, Merlot. Softened up quite nicely after cellaring 2 yrs…suspect quite tannic on release?
Nice berry/cherry nose but tad closed I think. Smooth tannins, nice acidity, dark fruits and cherry. Hint of cocoa on the finish with some spice (some ripe fruit here too). Only my first glass so stay tuned!
