Because I can relate the flavors to other wines I’ve had that have had similar notes? Isn’t that the entire POINT of a tasting note? Look, if someone’s so knowledgable about a region, why in hell would they want to wade through hundreds of notes on it? I don’t need notes on red Burg… I’ve been tasting it for 15 years. The only utility to notes is when exploring a new region and getting the lay of the land… figuring out which producers might be worth trying, etc.

Of course, one way to add some clarity to tasting notes would be to use comparisons, perhaps to things with which even a novice might be familiar. I don’t know, just thinking out loud here, but maybe . . .
