Good Wines, Bad Shirt (w/ pics)

This past Saturday I hosted a small dinner for a French buddy of mine. As much as I like Jean-Michel, his sartorial tastes are, well, interesting (see pic). He is most certainly NOT French when it comes to fashion. So despite being bedazzled by his shirt, we managed to enjoy some lovely wines and good food on a cool Fall Saturday night.
-NV Pol Roger Brut
This had obviously seen some heat damage but was still drinkable, and as it was a gift from my guests I couldn’t not pour it even though I had another bottle of bubbly cooling in the fridge. Grrr… Still, it had some life left in it, with some darker fruits and nutty accents backed by yeasty notes and a short finish.

-NV Moutard Brut
Ah, this is more like it. After the cooked Pol Roger, this was like a breath of fresh air. Crisp, vibrant, bright citrus fruit were held aloft on a light-on-its feet body that ended in a mid-length finish. Delicious, even with foie gras.
-2005 Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Lovely, absolutely singing now. I opened it and left the cork in it while I cooked, so it quasi-breathed before dinner. However, it really popped with the lamb chops, showing dark fruits, notes of garrigue, all on a mid-sized body that was both balanced and imposing, and ending with a long, crisp finish. I think this is my last bottle, sadly, but these 2005s have been just glorious and great QPRs (I believe I paid around $25 per).

-2004 Fevre Chablis Fourchaume
I opened this before dinner and left it in the fridge to open up. At first, it smelled of lemony scallops, but the palate was just closed down. After a few hours in the fridge, it really exploded, with lovely notes of those lemony scallops, minerals, and a slight herbal note on a slightly oily but crisp frame. It was a perfect foil for the cheeses.
Cheers!

The Fevre sounds delish.

I must say however, I do like your buddy’s shirt. And yes, I have no fashion sense either…

Was your friend in Philly last week perchance? That might explain the shirt.

Fevre rocked, it was from the Cabrini sale ealier this month.

And I might have to bitch-slap you for liking that shirt. [pillow-fight.gif]

That goose serving dish is so wrong.

I want one.

I am working on it…

My family in France gave it to me, I’ll find out where we can get one for you.
