Good BBQ anywhere in LA?

Howdy folks!

I am looking for suggestions for any good BBQ in LA. I am personally a fan of dry rub, but, am open to hear any suggestions.

Thanks!

Leslie

  1. Buy Weber charcoal kettle or BGE
  2. Buy charcoal
  3. Buy smoking wood chips
  4. Buy brisket, pork butt or ribs
  5. Make dry rub
  6. Smoke meat using Tex’s method
  7. Dig in and enjoy

When we lived in the LA area, Pecos Bill’s BBQ, a walk-up stand on Victory Blvd, just north of Riverside Drive, in Glendale, was our long-time favorite. It’s East Texas style BBQ. I have no idea if they are still there. The original owners retired some years ago and one of their sons and a friend ran the BBQ stand. We haven’t been there for five or so years. We did eat there for over 40 years, from the early 60s thru the 2000s.

Hands down this be the shizbit.

when I was a student, we used to go to a place at the split between Washington Blvd and Washington Place, in Culver City/Venice…the name escapes me right now (maybe some Westsiders know the place and can provide the name, its right next to the car wash)…it was a good little spot

Huston’s on Cahuenga Blvd in Hollywood is good stuff.

I hear the best kind of BBQ in LA is Korean BBQ for what it’s worth.

BBQ is one of those personal food tastes, like pizza, hot dogs and pastrami. Here are a few names you can Google that seem to come up a lot. LA is pretty spread out and so are these places.

Phillip’s
Perdue
Baby Blues
Dr. Hogley Wogley
Big Mista’s
Zeke’s
Boneyard Bistro
Rib Ranch
Porky’s
Bludso’s

We have some older friends who grew up in Beaumont , Texas and they swear by this stuff. All of us live close to the Torrance Farmer’s Market so we can easily pick some up. The one time I tried the brisket…it was fabulous!

Cheers!

Phillip’s (on Leimert) - my favorite for ribs

Interested to try BigMista’s; it’s got a strong online foodie following.

I think Milos is referring to JR’s BBQ (on La Cienega) - they have a pretty solid pulled pork sandwich

Still there. Stopped in on Sat for 2 Okey porks ($4.50 each). If you love sauce-y pulled pork, this is the place. Not for everyone though. Picked up 2 quarts of their sauce ($1.50 each, seriously) to make it at home. Everytime we’re in LA, it’s our pilgrimage.

I remembered the name…it is called Outdoor Grill, and apparently there is one in Northridge also (which I’ve never been to)

the West LA location

thank goodness you weren’t referring to JR’s, Milos. JR’s is, IMO, some of the worst BBQ I’ve ever had. Might as well buy yourself some Manwich and Wonderbread buns.

Ahh, Outdoor Grill. Not really BBQ per se, but a decent option if you’re in a fix.

Tell us how you really feel, whoa!

I’ve been there once and it was fine.

Name your favorite bbq joint tough guy! [berserker.gif]

i really haven’t found one that I like in LA yet … I’ll be giving many of these a try, though … especially Outdoor Grill b/c it’s so close to me.

the main reason i havnen’t found one in LA is that i rarely feel like BBQ, and, when I do, I prefer to do it at home.

the best baby-backs I’ve ever had were at Dixie’s on Grand in St. Paul, MN. I know how odd that sounds, but keep in mind I haven’t had the opportunity to visit any of this country’s BBQ hot-spots. I imagine that as I have opportunities to have “real BBQ” my regard for JR’s will only worsen. That said, I tried JR’s b/c a friend of mine (who actually lived in TX for awhile (but who also orders nothing but meatloaf or hamburgers no matter where we go to eat)) said it’s some of the best BBQ he’s ever had.

Sounds like you need to do more research! neener

Bludso’s BBQ - a place I’ve been wanting to try for a while now. A darling on the foodie websites and now the master of food prose Jonathan Gold has written a glorious review:

Beechwood in Seal Beach is freakin’ great. Ate there on Sunday.
