Good Article on John Gilman

How many points do they give him?

Very nice.

Nice write-up.

Nice read, thanks for the link.

Nice article about a nice guy.

At one point, it says “a bimonthly newsletter about wine that he writes out of his beloved Croton-on-Hudson home. (Gilman lives in a 110-year-old country inn that was converted into seven apartments…)” which is the place I remember.

At another point, it says “Now, in Westchester, where he works out of a studio attached to his three-bedroom apartment, …”

Is this 2 different descriptions of the same place?

A man’s apartment is his castle.

Good profile. Thanks for the link.

Yes. Croton-on-Hudson is in Westchester County. It’s confusingly presented though.

I read Croton as Corton initially.

Mark,

Nice article, thanks for posting.

Any idea who the German estate is?

Anybody know where in Western Mass he’s from?

Beyond trying the samples I sent him, he didn’t know me at all before we met at my table at Pinot Days in NYC last Jan. When I mentioned that I was looking for a distributor there, he went way out of his way to introduce my pinot to the one he felt would be the best match – Satyr Picks. Nice guy indeed! (Though that didn’t stop him from panning my viognier in the most recent newsletter.)

John did a pretty winning interview with Levi Dalton on Dalton’s radio show.

great guy, helped me with an amazing trip to Burgundy a decade ago. Been getting his email rag since day one.

champagne.gif What’s your father’s palate preference like, John?

Truchot, natch!

Nice article, have always been a fan. Also nice to see Cuvaison validated…lucked in to a bottle of their '73 Zin recently and it was awesome.

One may not always agree with him (though I often do, at least for Bordeaux and US-cabernets), but I think we need voices like Gilman. Critics move the market (some more than others), influencing many wine makers in the process (though by no means all), so having a champion for a style and approach to wine making is important in helping preserve diversity in wine.

John is a very good writer and a very nice person. Nice to see him get some press.
