Gonon 2001 St Joseph

As for age(ability) I felt the wine is at a good spot with regards to showing all of the archetypal characteristics of aged Northern Rhône Syrah yesterday. I have no doubt the wine will effortlessly continue to drink well for years, the structure is formidable.

I served this with beef which, in my humbled opinion, was a mistake. I would prefer it with something stronger; lamb at least and pintade ideally.

From a magnum. Opened 5 hours in advance. Slow ox’d.

Violets, pepper, game meat and black truffles. The wine starts off tight and austere. An hour in the glass opens the wine and a sweet, rich and ripe raspberry candied fruit evolves. A note of iron replaces the pepper and meat. The wine is firmly tannic but superbly balanced by the hedonistic fruit which, in turn, is nicely offset by the umami truffle flavour.
