Going to France in January

Any suggested spots?

You could try Paris for starters.

Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.

I would try Southern France if you are looking for warmer weather. Northern France can be colder, especially in winter.

As above, unless you are good with the cold I would try to stay south. If you like the wines down south, it makes sense. A few more details will help.

Keep in mind, it can be pretty chilly in the southland as well, especially if the mistral is blowing.

If jet lag is an issue, I’d think about whether you intend to rise early or late in the mornings. If early, I’d recommend Eastern France because the sun comes up earlier there. In Western France, the sun rises and sets later.

The weather won’t be quite as good but this should get you fired up.

Hi Jack

First time or first time in a while to France? Paris is great at all times of the year (save August when the city shutters up). I spend a lot of time there for work and I always look forward to the next trip. I would be happy to help you fill in a few days with ideas if you could provide a little insight as to what you’re interested in doing.

No one has mentioned it but there is always the Alps. You could go skiing for a few days. There isn’t another part of France more beautiful than the alps during January. It isn’t a wine region per se but, if visiting a wine region is on your list of priorities, you can easily detour through Champagne, Bourgogne or Rhone on your way to the mountains.

If the south is more your style and you are up for a peculiar event the town of Menton (to the east of Monaco near the Italian boarder) has a festival of Lemons in January. I’ve always been told they have the festival to remind the rest of the country that the weather is much better there than anywhere else at that time of year!

Feel free to ask for more ideas or tips.

… or if you like to hibernate perhaps postpone your trip.

Depends how long you are here for and what you want to see/do.
It’s quite a big place.
January is cold, even in the South.

Indeed it completely depends on what you want to do, what you like, etc. France isn’t exactly tiny or empty…

To add to Guillaume…it also isn’t a bad place to be when it is cold…don’t let the comments above detract from your excitement to visit France in January. There exists a plethora of things to do despite the normal weather that the entire northern hemisphere experiences during the firsts month of the year. Many might be surprised that a lot of people purposefully come to the country during winter.

Given a choice, I’d prefer to go to France not in January. Given the opportunity, I’d go to France in January, or any other month, in a heartbeat.

The good thing is that it’s often easier to get appointments with wineries in Jan or Feb than at any other point during the year…

And the wines taste better in the winter.

And you can take this kind of picture in the backyard of famous producers in Burgundy

Guillaume I like the signature you use in your photos. Nice touch.

Personally we enjoy snowshoe’ing (raquette) in the Jura. We used to ski a lot but our daughter has been too small until this year (she turned 3 a few months ago). Cold + low places = rain and no fun. Cold + high places = snow and lots of interesting things to do. Haute Savioe is beautiful in winter.

And truffles (the black ones indigenous to France) are at their peak in January.

You mean the long shadow? Friends have started tagging me on FB in whichever picture they post featuring a shadow

If you enjoy Northern Rhone wines, you might want to go to the Marché aux Vins in Ampuis. Usually for 4 days around the 3rd week of January.
