I was hoping for an operatic performance here, but the wine initially appeared to fall short. On day one it was like a young Barbera on the nose after an afternoon in the decanter, so I poured it back into the bottle, left the wine overnight, and decanted the wine again this afternoon. I think I have only ever been so brutal with the dry reds of Wendouree.
Sometimes I wish I could buy the last glass in every bottle. Wow! It’s autumnal and twiggy, and earthy and magically, the rich and layered dark fruits of day one have reappeared. Before coming together now, the wine’s early afternoon beauty was the full and silky smooth palate which cleverly masks the wine’s power and intensity and high levels of extract. Big and earthy tannins complete.
Another wonderful wine from Piedmont that will transcend generations.
Just had the Giacosa Barolo Falletto White label 1993. Beautiful wine that inititially fruit, licorice and rose petals. By the time we finished was showing a little bit of leafmeal and earth. Gorgeous wine, and again when one deals with a minimum of $300 for Riservas, the white labels are an incredible deal.
We did a short decant, and in the two hours that the wine was open, it went from quite primary Barolo flavors to nice tertiary ones. So if it is going to be drunk over a long period you get the best of both worlds; if you are a fast drinker, or sharing it with a large group, so that you only have one glass, I would probably slow O it for a couple of hours before decanting.
