Hard to beat Fourrier VV for village at the price. Bichot and Damoy probably wouldn’t be my ports of call, but palates differ.
Peter,
Did your tastes change or did the profile change from D- Laroze? Seems that the Domaine has received higher accolades in the past five vintages than the '08 and '09?
D=Laroze crafted their wines for vintage 2008 and vintage 2009 beautifully and specifically their CdBeze.
I matched D-Laroze CdV with Eugenie CdV from 2008 vintage. The answer was clear in that I much preferred the Eugenie. Thier prices are quite different also.
I did not buy D=Laroze wines from other vintages beside 2008 and 2009 so I could not really answer your questions.
BUT after comparing the CdBeze 2008 - side by side - from D-Laroze with Damoy, I settled down on Damoy.
That being said, it is very personal. Bearing in mind that there were big difference in prices.
Damoy - Chambertin 08 ( $211.50)
Domaine Eugenie - CdVougeot 08 (1139 3807 $ 258)
Drouhin-Laroze - CdVougeot 08 (1181-7631 $128)
Drouhin-Laroze - CdBesze 09 (1181-7622 $162)
Drouhin-Laroze - CdVougeot 09 (1181-7649 $134)
My go-tos for good to great Gevrey-Chambertin AC are Claude Dugat and Joseph Drouhin.
Dugat wines are very sexy and plush but also have tremendous aging power. There are many tiers here- Bourgogne, then Gevrey, then Gevrey 1er cru, then Gevrey Lavaux St. Jacques and finally at the top level you can go in a variety of directions with his grand crus.
The price jump is quite significant at each point, and always has been, but the overall quality of the regular Gevrey is quite high and you will get, in some measure, a little bit of all the things that make Dugat great in general. Right now it is $140ish a bottle and I think one of the best values in Burgundy. It also ages very nicely- improving for up to a decade- though usually is enjoyable young as well.
As for Drouhin, they are more classic and easy-going at the AC level, but the quality is great here. As one of the largest negociants and land owners in Burgundy, they have an enviable selection of grapes at their disposal.
Their Gevery Chambertin AC is still under $100, though that may change in 2020 as the price hikes at the upper levels were significant. And while we are on the subject- their Vosne-Romanee AC and Chambolle-Musigny AC (the Chambolle most of all of these) are also great wines in their own right that age and improve nicely.
That’s an interesting description of Dugat, Tom. What vintages are you thinking of? I bought a lot of his 19s precisely because, for the vintage, they weren’t plush.
Greg, how would you describe it? I haven’t opened any 2019s yet assuming they need more time.
The village wines don’t. I’d describe it as a better version of bachelet.
She is more focused on Fixin but, Berthaut Gerbet makes some pretty incredible Gevrey Chambertin.
Her wines are amazing all around.
Stocking up on 2017 Claude Dugat Gevrey myself.
Had one and really liked it.
Hoping it becomes even better in a few years time.
I own multiple bottles of B. Gerget’s 2019 Fixin. Sadly her Gevrey was not available here.
