Hi all,
I visited local flea market few weeks ago and I found a bottle of Gevrey Chambertin 1969 so I decided to go for it. Unfortunately, I know nothing about this particular bottle… I don’t know how much is it worth, is it good for drinking or should it landed in the bin?
Weird thing is that there is no alcohol content mentioned on the label. I have spent a long time doing research on the net but I haven’t found anything about it. Maybe somebody in here will be able to help me?
Thanks
What is the fill like? Can’t really see in that picture.
There are some great 1969s in my limited experience, but most that are still good are well-stored Grand Cru and top 1er (although Mark G served a great Drouhin village level Chambolle from very good/cold English storage).
But this is a village Gevrey apparently bottled by an English shipper, so I’d guess monetary value pretty close to nothing. But there is a chance it might be tasty.
The number of domaines in Burgundy that estate bottled back then was quite small, and numerous firms from England purchased wine in barrel and bottled them under their labels. Many times these bottlings were from great sources - but the bottling firms preferred to build their own brands rather than the grower’s name. And, this could have been a blend from numerous growers -
If it is a decent fill, it’s worth looking at - my guess is the price is right - '69 was a fabulous vintage - and I think it’s worth the gamble -
How much did you pay for it?
George
Thanks for your posts guys. I paid…£5 for it (I live in the UK).
Dale - My wine knowledge is very limited but in my opinion it looks good. I also found an information that Gevrey Chambertin 1969 is very highly rated but not being heavily involved in a vintage wines it’s hard to confirm whether this particular bottle could be expensive or at least drinkable.
An outstanding year. Looks like a ‘home brand’ kind of wine that would have been bottled by a Negociant of the day. If stored well it will probably be drinking quite well. Not worth a lot but I’d give you a bit more than the 5 quid you paid for it…maybe a tenner!
Be careful, Luke. Jeremy comes from that place where you sent all your convicts.
This seems to be a wine at least shipped (in bottles?), but probably shipped in barrel and bottled in London. The label is an English one, no mentioning any AOC (and the alc. has not to be indicated until 1985).
1969 is a very good to outstanding vintage, so it depends on the condition (fill level) and storage over the last decades, I think in good condition it should be at least drinkable, but is probably good to very good.
In the latter case L 5 was a bargain - but it´s not worth more than 40-50 Pounds even in the best condition …
just tryin’ to pick 'is pocket there ‘guvner’.
