Germany's 2021 vintage - as seen through the lens of Weingut Keller

Thanks for the incouragement! However, I’m just about to take home a pallet of - not wine - but Math tests that need to be corrected and graded by Monday morning so…the glamorous life of a teacher… No time right now for more posts on Riesling.

Description of the von der Fels is spot on. Stunning bottle!

Now that the wine reviews from the pro’s are coming (some months after my impressions… ), I realise that my initial take on Keller’s 2021 is slightly harsh in comparison. As can be expected, since I always seem to rate wines less favorably from people I know personally. Just to keep them on their toes. However, to Keller’s defence, I’ve visited them on several occasions since that first time in spring and have had numerous possibilities to taste the wines again - so I actually agree on the somewhat higher ratings I’ve seen so far. Will try to publish some impressions from my 2nd, 3rd and 4th visit to the estate this year.

I hope it includes Pizza reviews.

But of course, Robert!

I have learned (the hard way) that I need to stay very close to Julia when the pizza comes out of the oven. That goes for pizzas made by visiting American pizza demi-Gods as well. Otherwise, it’s gone in the blink of an eye, almost faster than the uncanny, super-rapid evaporation of Keller’s wines from the bottle once they are opened - something I have clearly indicated is a most irritating nuisance for us wine consumers. It happened just recently - I opened a 2020 Keller Riesling von der Fels and poured it to my mother. A moment later that evening, I wanted to grab a glass myself but noticed only a small, almost insignificant last Schluck was left. When inquiring with my mother, she (with not a small amount of upset distress in her voice, I tell you) blamed the low level of wine inside the bottle on ultra-rapid evaporation and that her intention was to call Klaus-Peter in person to give him a good verbal bashing while at the end of the day demanding a reimbursement or at least a refill. I listen patiently to her outcry and what she will shout in Klaus-Peter’s ears and then I fetched a new bottle to open. :sunglasses:

Hi Miran! Are you still involved with Origo and, if so, when are the ’21s coming to Sweden?

Miran, thanks. You assume a proximity to what you see as the Keller family’s mind and soul when growing and vinifying their extraordinary wine. That relationship seems at once credible, justified and unforced. The 2021 vintage will always be too “under-ripe” for me, but I can understand people who find it fascinating like a 1971 vintage with modern technology. Time will tell if I am missing out on something singular by not stocking up on it.

Question, does Keller make a Frauenberg Riesling GG? I saw some entries in CT and also one seller on WS-Pro. Any insight on this bottling in the context of other Keller GG’s?

Yes, starting in 2020–thought it was good, and better than Kirschpiel or Hubacker in 2020.
