German vineyard recommendations

I will be travelling to Germany in April for research on a book. Can anyone recommend winemakers to visit in Baden and Rheingau especially.

Specifically I’m looking for those with a histrory (as far back as the 60s) of bucking established trends: ie, in terms of how the wine is made relative to its neighbors, or who have had great success with grapes less common for their region (gewurztraminer in Baden or Rheingau, for example).

I will also be in the Pfalz and the Neckar if you have recommendations there, and might be able to make it to a few others.

Thanks,
Bob Krumm

Had a fantastic visit at Dr. Heger’s in the Baden. Here’s some info:

Dr. Heger Estate / Weinhaus Heger
Bachenstrasse 19, 79241 Ihringen / Germany

Enjoy, incredibly beautiful country side out there! Stop for the spargle if you’re there in
the spring!

The title says “vineyard” recs., but I’m assuming you mean “winery” recs., no?

I would recommend August Kesseler in Rheingau. Yes, their Rieslings are some of the best in Rheingau, but from what I understand they also make some pretty decent Spatburgunder.

Thanks. I’ll try to get to both Kesseler and Dr. Heger.
