Opened this to drink it over a few days.
It won’t last the night. It is just in a perfect spot.
Absolutely delicious.
Two weekends ago I made a short trip to St Kitts to visit some friends and I took some wine with me, including this:
2022 Stein Spätburgunder Red Light!
No formal notes and from memory, this vintage is broader on the nose and palate than the 2019, I don’t want to say that it was jumping out of the glass because that expression is already trademarked ![]()
Unlike the 2019, this vintage works at the regular red wine temperature and slightly chilled as well. Definitely a rebuy for me.
Did anybody try the 2021 Wasenhaus cuvées recently?
It’s the only vintage I tried and when I did, September of last year, i wasn’t thrilled (a little thin, short and astringent for the basic and Vulkan). I’m wondering if I should give it another try soon.
The base 2021 has improved, but the vintage will still show and probably always will.
So yes it is worth opening them now. Just don’t expect a miraculously transformation.
I had the 21 Möhlin yesterday. It is super light. 11.5%. Enjoyable wine and open at the moment. A product of the vintage.
Do you expect '21 Wasenhaus single vineyard bottlings still to improve (or at least maintain) or do you feel that there is a rush to consume them?
So hard to say. I think they will be good for at least several years so no immediate rush.
Was the Pinot Noix the 3rd? Had it tonight, little bit of a minty taste but surprising nice. Dhroner Hofberg always seems to deliver good wines.
Dhroner Hofberg is one of the best sites for Riesling in the Mosel. A.J. Adam and Nik Weis also have Pinot Noir on this south-facing slope in the side valley of the Dhron.
Yes it was the 3rd. That is the entry level in Twardowski’s line up and I actually like it by far the best.
Some random notes.
23 BGO from Wasenhaus honestly sucked. Fungible with bazillion natty lite red. Nothing special.
22 Wasenhaus Kalk. Dug it. A bit lighter and more stemmy than I expected but stoked Ive got three more that I randomly found at Crush.
20 Twardoiskie Ardoise. This got debate. Had with Peking duck tasting in Queens with Lyle. He found it too dominated by oak. Me, yeah… I get that but still liked. Lovely black berries underneath and I wished for more purity. Air helped but the under elements were just too torqued, tbh
2022 Wasenhaus Spätburgunder - Love this wine. I have now had it 10 or so times and it just beautiful.
2022 Wasenhaus Kalk - This tastes atypical for the Wasenhaus line up. Like Andrew I like it but it does lean a little more natty, maybe even Beaujoalis like.
2022 Wasenhaus - This is really beautiful and perfectly balanced. Great structure. This should age nicely.
As I said above my favorite in the Twardowski is actually the entry level wine.
Andrew, naive question but what is BGO?
Guessing it is Grand Ordinaire but can’t figure out the B!
Baden Grand Ordinaire I assume?
Yes, I was making a silly joke.
The “BGO” is certainly made in a more natty carbonic style. It does surprisingly seem to stabilise a bit after some bottle age, but it will always show its nature ofcause. I enjoyed a recent 2022 much more than I did at release.
I had my first “none-BGO” 2022 last Sunday.
@Claus_Jeppesen blinded me on 2022 Mohlin.
While it only took me a single sniff to guess Wasenhaus, I guessed mid-tier Vulkan/Kalk (never had kalk). It was delicious, but more straightforward than I am used to. I think that shows that they gain a lot from age. Had a few 18’s and 20’s lately and the were just much deeper and complex in their current state.
I couldn’t find the producer here in this thread, but I think this Spätburgunder is a QPR-tip and worth to be mentioned here:
Florian Weingart, Spätburgunder Spay in der Zech 2020
This is a mid-powerful Spätburgunder from a small producer from the Mittelrhein. This wine has grip, good structure and complexity, dried fruits, herbs and black pepper on nose and palate. Very nice for the price (€ 20,-). It surpassed many of the more expensive Pinots in a blind tasting of Spätburgunders below the GG-class. In terms of style this reminded me of a Pommard I had a few days before that tasting…
Sounds interesting!
