2022 Meyer-Nӓkel Pfarrwingert Spӓtburgunder GG
Polished, suave, elegant and the (30% new) oak is evident. But, there is also good luscious juicy fruit in the middle and this does not offend me as oaky. If it were not tasted next to the Stodden, I might like it even more! Also note that MN picked later (when sun returned after August rains), so their grapes got even riper and richer. But this is not a heavy wine, very seductive and attractive.
2022 Jean Stodden Herrenberg Spӓtburgunder GG
Lovely bottle that goes through many stages during the meal. It shows more ‘complex’ than the MN and with crisper cut and more mineral, all of which is great for me. This was picked earlier than the MN, before the August rains, so that plays a role. But still retains warm year ripeness and depth to the fruit. Very nice.
Great comparison of two interpretations of Ahr slate Spӓtburgunder from 2022. Easy to enjoy in Germany, and can’t go wrong, but more difficult to replicate in the US…
I don’t drink a lot of Huber so was pleased to have this bottle of 2023 Malterdingen Alte Reben. Great fruit, great perfume and pretty good definition for a ripe young wine. Would have liked to see it blossom with air, but we drank it too quickly!
Jakob Moise Spatburgunder 24 - Terrific and much more open for business than I would have expected. Fruit was a touch candied with some baking spice while remaining fresh and crunchy, enough tannic structure and balanced acid to retain complexity and still be primary and drinkable. Looked a touch hazy so probably could stand it up for a bit and let it settle out, but no reason to not check in if you’ve got a few. I purchased some of the intro offer from source material a few years back and was impressed but missed out on more recent vintages until now - fingers crossed I can load up on the 25s!
NV Falkenstein spatburgunder rosé sekt brut nature. First taste after PnP and this was a super linear sparkler that was propped up by a ton of acidity. After 15 minutes in the glass it opened up and showed a ton of cranberry, grapefruit, and overripe strawberry. There were more ripe fruit characteristics than I was expecting, with a hint of tropical fruit peeking out the more it warmed up. The finish is long and delightfully sour.
