So rare its never been released I think! ![]()
A very small amount came to the U.S.
In short I like it. Very intoxicating nose. All red summer berries. Showing the vintage though, as it is lacking a bit of fruit on the taste. Very excited to try the higher end wines in a better vintage.
This is bananas. I hate using Burg metaphor but this has Volnay richness x Morey florals. Or something. It just edges that saccharine plumb that some over extracted DE Spatb get but always stays natural and rewarding. Glad I have two more!
So happy you liked it. Max is an extremely talented winemaker. He is just getting started with Pinot!
If one were dead set on exploring SpÀtburgunder in Germany it would seemingly make sense to start or least focus heavily on the Ahr. However I rarely drink wines from the Ahr because either they are not readily available in the U.S. or they are made in a heavy handed manner that is not appealing to me. Last year I was having lunch in NYC with Philippe and Monika Pacalet and after a few bottles I asked our sommelier to blind us on something. He chose a wine from the Ahr that was just a disaster, over oaked, extracted, just a mess! I was flat out embarrassed. Then I traveled to the Ahr this past December and as expected the vineyards are stunning yet the Ahr still remains a mystery to me.
I have heard from someone I have the utmost respect for that the recent Meyer-NĂ€kel wines are something I should try. So with that in mind I was thrilled to see some 2021s at Chambers Street Wines. I immediately ordered all three a Pinot, FrĂŒburgunder and a Rose. So far I have had the Pinot and Fruh. These are beautiful, elegant, restrained wines. A triumph that these wines were able to be made in 2021.
I feel there is a haunting beauty in the wines.
2021 Meyer-NĂ€kel FrĂŒhburgunder - An elegant wine with perfectly ripe fruit that is in complete harmony. I served this slightly chilled at Uncle Lous Chinese restaurant in NYC. It is a beautiful wine that paired perfect with all of the food and proved more versatile than a young riesling that I thought would work with everything 13% abv. It is not radically different than the Pinot but different and unique enough that I am thrilled it is now coming into the U.S.
2021 Meyer-NĂ€kel Pinot Noir - This is just a tad less ripe (12.5% abv) than the FrĂŒh and the fruit profile is more cherry than plum. It has a great acidity reflecting the vintage. It is just a joy to drink and disappears fast. Delicious.
I will report back on the Rose.
2021 Meyer-NĂ€kel Spatburgunder Rose - This is for the acid freaks and therefore I absolutely love it. Upon opening it is just raging with acidity. With about 15-20 minutes of air you can now taste the fruit. A tad out of balance initially but I absolutely love it, not for everyone.
Overall I am very impressed with these three wines from Meyer-NĂ€kel and very much look forward to trying the 2022s. I can definitely see a change at the Domain.
Also Vom Boden did a big Spatburgunder tasting for the trade this week. Sadly I could not break away from the office. I heard from a number of somms that they were blown away as Pascaline (NYCâs top somm) says the hype is real! Just remember you all heard it here first!

I was out and about this weekend and was delighted to see so many non-Riesling German wines (Chardonnay, Silvaner, Spatburgunder) on top wine lists all around the city (GEM Wine, Parcelle and Ilis).
Anybody have the Spatburgunders from WEINGUT ECKEHART GROHL in the Rheinhessen?
Hearing good things, purchased the 2021 and 2019 to try -
Weingut (Albert) Gessinger
I have not heard of it. There are so many wineries in Germany. Please report back.
Good Rieslings, never had their Spaetburgunder
Spatburgunder stand at Mythos Mosel. Looks good⊠#
Some very brief notes on all of the 24 wines that were at the Bernkasteler Ring stand in Mythos Mosel.
After tasting all these wines itâs clear to me that I have a platonic idea of a perfect Mosel Spatburgunder. That wine has the following characteristics: cranberry fruits, freshness (that term doing a lot of lifting: lightness, acidity, clean winemaking), and minerality. The last of those is the one which is particularly reflective of âMoselâ terroir. All comments below should be contextualised with that in mind.
Overall, the 2020s did not show well.
1. 2022 Pinot Noir -WĂŒrtzberg-
Burgundy nose. Flowers. Very fine. Light. Classic Mosel.
2. 2021 SpÀtburgunder Reserve -Axel Pauly-
More funky. Heavy and bitter. Not red fruits.
3. 2021 Pinot Noir Bestes Fuder -FJ Regnery-
Dryer and more tannic. Less fruit. Oak?
4. 2020 SpÀtburgunder-Schmitges-
Redder. Bit thin and woody. Rose adjacent.
5. 2020 Pinot Noir -Richard Richter-
As above.
6. 2020 SpÀtburgunder -Markus Fries-
Back to cranberry. Oxidative. Nail polish. Good if this is a rogue bottle, not so much if generally polish-y.
7. 2020 Pinot Noir Einstern -Markus Molitor-
Creamy Berries. Well made. Too much oak for me.
8. 2020 SpÀtburgunder Reserve -Philipps Eckstein-
Sophisticated, but lacking all of the aspects of wine 1.
9. 2020 Pinot Noir Reserve -WĂŒrtzberg-
Creamy cranberries. More sphictsicted version of wine 1, might prefer wine 1. Reminds of Hoffman Simon 15 ***.
10. 2020 Zeltinger Himmelreich Pinot Noir Reserve -Gessinger-
Muted. Creamy. A little bitter.
11. 2020 Piesporter Falkenberg SpÀtburgunder -Weller Lehnert-
Attractive nose. Creamy-heavy. Sophisticated.
12. 2020 Piesporter Falkenberg Pinot Noir -Lehnert Veit
Fruity. Oaky. Tastes older than should do for a 20.
13. 2020 Lösnicher Försterlay GG SpÀtburgunder -Schmitges-
Balanced. Neutral. Cleanly made. Slightly bitter. Blackberries.
14. 2020 KlĂŒsserather Bruderschaft GG Pinot Noir -FJ Regnery-
Berries, light, some bitterness. Oaky but okay.
15. 2019 Pinot Noir Barrique -Richard Richter-
Fine but oxidative. Slightly bitter.
16. 2019 Briedeler Weisserberg SpÀtburgunder-Walter-
Light. Not cranberry but very fresh. Light on wood. Very good.
17. 2019 Lieserer Niederberg Helden GG Pinot Noir -Thanisch Erben MĂŒller-Burggraef-
Rose light. Cranberry. Pleasant. Some minerality. Older version of wine 1. Favoured style.
18 2019 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen GG Pinot Noir -Lehnert Veit-
Restrained bitterness. Drinking window. Mosel characteristics.
19. 2019 Winninger Hamm GG Pinot Noir -Richard Richter-
Blackberries again. Well made. Not preferred style.
20. 2018 SpÀtburgunder -Erben von Beulwitz-
Not Mosel style. Sophisticated, Burgundian. Flowers, iron, blood.
21. 2018 Schweicher Annaberg Pinot Noir -Werner-
Burgundian style. Delicious. Light with range of red and darker berry fruits.
22. 2018 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen GG Pinot Noir -Lehnert Veit-
A bit over oaky but very sophisticated. Soft â could be more acidic.
23. 2018 Piesporter Falkenberg Pinot Noir Alte Reben Auktion -Lehnert Veit-
More body. Tannic. Good.
24. 2017 Neefer Frauenberg SpÀtburgunder-Franzen-
Completes circle. Light. Cranberry. Mineral and acid. Platinic for of Mosel Spatburgunder.
Speaking of the Ahr, here is a fine specimen.
A 2012 Heimersheimer R, meanwhile a GG.
Reserve, raised in French barriques.
Dense and deep, excellent acidity. Fine toast, smoke and rust notes. A bit rustic but in a good inclusive way.
@MaciejK is my new hero. See what arrived in Copenhagen today:
As I am not exactly the most patient person, I opened one right away.
I promise I will write a proper note in a day or two, depending on how far I can stretch the bottle.
But after drinking more than half a bottle, over a few hours, I will just say that this completely restored my faith in the age ability of the top cuvées.
Great wine.
Tried a bottle of 2019 Twardowski Ardoise. High toned, red fruit - thinking cranberries. Good depth and length on the palate, has a level of seriousness to the structure. I liked it though it wasnât superlative to my palate either.
Okay it didnât last more than two days⊠![]()
Wasenhaus, Bellen, 2016.
The notes stayed rather consistent throughout. The biggest issue was that the intensity changed throughout. From a bit muted to expressive. It probably needs another few years to find a more stable state.
Their wines always seem to gain a slightly darker and deeper fruit expression with time, which was also the case here.
The wine has all things cherries, a bit of cranberries, and some acidic red berries. There are some green stem notes, but in the best possible way. Fresh herbs. Licorice. Cinnamon. Some floral notes in the background. A bit of earthy mushroomy notes. A hint of something smokey. High acidity.
But most importantly it is very well balanced.
Beautiful and so much fresher than my previous experiences with some age on them.
Great to try a sound bottle after being a bit unlucky with TCA and problematic corks.
Another SpÀtburgunder!
This is also good, but needs some air to get going right now.
It has a nice, more Burgundian fruit profile. I think it has the concentration to age gracefully. When it is served on the colder side, a more acidic perfumed red fruit is allowed to come forward. I prefer it like that currently.
It has developed some early earthy notes with a bit of beetroot and mushroom. Seems to be a theme for me with some of these German pinots. There is a bit of smoke as well. High acidity and just a hint of VA. Something slightly sweetâish, but well integrated. Overall it has a good balance.
Pretty impressed with these wines.
Certainly a rebuy.
Makalie 22s arrived yesterday!
Please report!
