Who is the producer?
Sven Nieger, Baden. Possibly a one off bottling.
Oh ok. I have a bunch of his wines in storage. They always surprise on the upside,
At the Vinum Weinguide Deutschland 2024 awards ceremony in Mainz on November 7th, I tasted Fürst’s 2021 Bürgstadter Hundsrück Spätburgunder GG, which was awarded the best Spätburgunder of the vintage. It was very good.
Martin Waßmer had two 2021 Spätburgunder wines that placed in the top ten, including a second-place finish.
Just opened a 2018 Achim Dürr Bühler Wolfhag Pinot Noir. It’s pretty interesting. My note:
Dark reddish brown color. Aroma puts me into the Russian River with cherry and spice and cola. Therefore the wine hits the palate with a big surprise - light bodied with sour cherry and firm to sable tannin with a hint of Chinese spices and soy on the backend. Interesting indeed. My first glass. My interest is piqued. Let’s see if I report more. For now, I’ll go with a conservative Very Good.
New name to me. Sounds pretty interesting though. Seems to somehow be connected to the german store Vinoteca Maxima which I have bought from a few times…
I liked, not loved the Achim Durr.
Interesting note. I have not tried on yet. Now I am really intrigued.
After two glasses last night I am in your camp. Tonight I will try and have a semi-serious Pinot Noir study with the remainder.
Didn’t post this in here as you all might be a bit tired of Wasenhaus notes haha. But basically the base Spätburgunder was singing, so pretty on the nose, and I am honestly at a point now where I had a lot more consistently good experiences with the Spätburgunder compared to the Vulkan which has been a bit all over the place.
Going forward I will probably try and buy a lot of Spätburgunder’s and a few of the big ones (If i can even buy these wines in the future).
What is the deal on the Julian Haart! Screwcap.
Special Kabinett cuvée made with the danish importer. Mostly from young Goldtröpfchen vines. It is such a steal!
Tonight’s hot take: the Achim Dürr Bühler Wolfhag has settled down on night 2. Aromatically it’s become “more German”, less RRV and more mild spice. There is cherry and cranberry with some spice on the palate. In a word, yum! Gonna enjoy this evening.
Enjoyed this 2020 a good bit last night. Translucent light red. Light bodied. Clean and fresh. I like that the lightness does not translate to lack of intensity.
Timely note! Mine should arrive today, looking forward to trying it.
For me that is the definition on almost all of my favourite wines. Light but concentrated at the same time.
I know I sound like a broken record. I have stopped posting on Wasenhaus for the most part in this thread. However I say to say the 21 Base level is drinking stunningly well now! I like it with just a little chill and if you can save a glass for the next day! DAMN is it great!
I have been waiting a bit with them. Maybe it is time to open another
This thread seems to have mostly popped off while I was in the middle of harvest, but what a joy to catch back up on. Although it re-confirms what my cellar already tells me: I never have enough German Spatburgunder, and whatever I buy ends up disappearing in a flash. The current best deal going in the Finger Lakes is a wine bar that came into some 2015 and 2018 Günther Steinmetz bottlings, but they didn’t have a price, so they just sell it all for $55 a bottle.
