German Chardonnay

Would love to taste a Keller. Not that easy to find though.

I don’t think the Chardonnay’s from some of the best new estates will have issues aging. At least mid term.

But Estates like Wasenhaus, Saalwächter and Moritz Kissinger only have a few vintages under their belts, so we just have to wait and see.

Wasenhaus rather cheap basis Weissburgunder from their first vintage, 2016, is still drinking just fine though.

I don’t think any of the Chardonnays from Felix have been released.

Correct me if I am wrong @Martin_Zwick

2021 Chardonnay will be released in March 2024, if my memory is correct.

I was shocked a few weeks ago, when a very good friend and quite experienced Chardonnay drinker told me he will sell all his aged Chardonnays from Huber, 2011&2012 etc. He was disappointed of the aging.

It will be interesting to follow this new generation and see if they can make wines that perform differently with age. Who knows.

That said then i don’t care if they can go for 10+ years as long as they improve well with some time in bottle. One of my favorite Jura estates makes Chardonnay that won’t last 10+ years but as they are pretty damn amazing after 4-5 its not really an issue hehe. And i do think the wines from the likes of Kissinger and Saalwächter is much more inspired by and reminiscent of Jura, where i would guess someone like Huber looked more towards Burgundy. But i don’t know the winemakers, just guessing based on their social media and how the wines taste.

Bought a few more Saalwächter so i will report back in a few years .

Fair argument.

Yes, Kissinger and Saalwächter is a young generation and more inclined with Jura and Natural wines, as Huber senior (RIP).

I also would like to recommend another impressive Chardonnay from the Pfalz region by Karsten Peter. He is/was the „Betriebsleiter“ and cellarmaster of Gut Hermannsberg from the Nahe region. He established a new family/boutique estate.

Here we have the first vintage:

That’s correct. Allocations will be alloted sometime in July.

In order to give you another point of view, also more professionell, regarding this 2021 Chardonnay „Reserve du Fils“ by Felix Keller.

David Rayer/Mosel Fine Wines was deeply impressed after tasting it. He said and I quote:

„like Ramonet in the 80s“

For us born in the 80’s… is that a good thing?

I see……:joy:

Lasse, I tell you a little secret. David Rayer had almost tears in his eyes drinking this Chardonnay. This says all.

Thank you @Martin_Zwick but I don’t need any other point of view than yours, if you like it, I buy it. Simple :joy:

On another note I had the 21 Jonas Dostert Chardonnay, it is not going to convince any traditional Chard lovers to like it, but I loved it. It is in the natural vain, a little cloudy, veering toward the savory mineral aspect of Chardonnay but it had just enough traditional chard flavors that I loved it and it paired really well with our meal.

I will see if i can find a bottle when it is released. Might be possible to get one from the danish importer :slightly_smiling_face:

O my…

What about the Keller Weisser burgunder & chardonnay? I guess maybe not that level but what are your thought on it?

I love the wine, especially when young.

Thanks Robert, have a few 2021s and wasn’t sure when to give it a try. Will try to locate one and open in a near future :+1:

Certainly you will get it from friend Tom/atomwine. I hope so!

2022 I haven’t tasted so far, but in the past it was always quite convincing.

To me it is no intended to be a serious wine. It is high energy, juicy and gulpable!
