What an amazing list!
Great Scot Robert! You certainly are the ambassador of German wines!!!
Great and ambitious work!
Robert, Iām amazed by the pace and dedication - even to consider putting together a tasting like that with your schedule (along with the wines you generously with passion share)
And thanks for share and posting about it all!
Anything in my humble cellars at your disposal whenever you pop by Amsterdam!
Thanks so much for the kind words and offer. I am overdue for a trip to Amsterdam!
Looking forward to whenever you make it over here!
Jonas Doostert - Chardonnay 2022
Jura meets Mosel. Intense straw yellow with light hues. Citrus, bitter grapefruit, slighlty bruised Apple, stone fruits, flint notes, herbs and spices, yellow flowers, mineralic. Fresh and salty, medium body, fine grip, balanced and long lasting. Cool Mosel Chardonnay. Curious to try other vintages of this, wondering if that slight phenolic bitterness comes from drought stress. This is great with food fo me, but without that bitter note ā¦
Three different Chardonnays from KP Keller + family this year
So excited for this! I put a ton of work into this dinner and I could not be happier for the growers!
BTW - The Keller Chards were absolutely stunning! STUNNING!
Bravo Robert. Thank you for all that you do for Germany! Wish I could have been there too - but we had a dinner I will never forget and snowball fight with Schƶnleber and Lauer at noreetuh that night.
Added some more thoughts on my IG page!
Had a few great German Chardonnays in LA this weekend! Great to see all of the excitement around the category.
Brought the firststrong text two to the DJ Muggs / Now Again / Brocway Cellars wine launch:
2022 Michael Andres Chardonnay N - Never heard of this producer before. It is brought in by Barrel Down Selections. Overall a very nice wine that is fairly priced in the $35 range. A small amount of oak. Nicely ripe fruit that presents in a balanced package. I would buy again.
2022 Wasenhaus - The is really nice with a tad more energy and liveliness that the Andres. Not much oak at all with a very lean profile. Not sure if this will change into something more complex with age.
2021 Furst Astheimer - Enjoyed this with the crab dish at Anajak. Very serious wine. Over the best of this past weekends wines. This will definitely get better with 3-5 years of age. BTW Anajak was on fire! Possibly my best meal there.
2021 Dostert - Enjoyed this at RVR in Venice. This wine always needs 15-30 minutes to get going and then once it does it is amazingly energetic. I just love this wine and how it straddles the line between a high energy natural wine profile and a classic serious Chardonnay. BTW RVR is excellent.
Wittmann Chardonnay Reserve 2023
Raised in wood, imparting it with notes of almonds and vanilla. Rich body, slightly creamy in texture, but well framed with decent acidity. Yellow fruit, a faint burnt milk note, a pinch of salt. An elegant, gentle bottle, if feeling a bit generic. Winning against a bland
Vougeot Blanc.
Was at a small Jülg tasting earlier this week and didnāt love the wines, Weissburgunder, Chardonnay and SpƤtburgunder. All very nice but a bit polished for my palate.
I was particularly curious/skeptical about the Opus-Oskar, which is their top line of wines āaboveā the GGs. However, this 2023 Chardonnay was indeed the best for my palate, and more elegant in its rich intense presentation than the Erste Lage or GG wines. From vines across the border in Alsace, a bureaucratic curiosity!
I agree completely that was the wine I was most skeptical about but liked the most.
Karsten Peter - Mineral āRā Chardonnay 2021
Crunchy reduction, similar aromas to the regular version, stone fruit, ripe citrus, tropical notes, yellow flowers, well integrated oak, mineralic. Fresh and juicy, full bodied with an impressive structure for 12,5%, fine grip, balanced and long lasting. Family estate of Gut Hermannsbergs winemaker, i prefer this style
Iām planning to have a crack at the Fuerst āRā on Friday (2022). Any advice on prep / decanting?
I never had Fürsts top Chardonnay so far but i drank the 22 BürgstƤdter Berg Chardonnay a while ago. Based on that iād probably go with a classic slow ox for some hours after a tasting sip. If its nice straight away just close the bottle or leave it open if closed. If not open enough shortly before serving there is always the option of aerating it in the decanter looking forward to your tasting note. Cheers!
Agree these wines need air.
For those who have had the Dostertās, do they need air to get going? Iāve got a '22 Iād like to try soon.
I think it does need air. It is a fascinating wine and so reflective of the winemaker that made it. It opens up a bit on the natty side. Within 20-30 minutes it becomes much more focused and classic. It is always a fun cerebral and enjoyable ride.
