(Gasp) Pretentious Wine Behavior You Have Observed

Vincent Price and Peter Lorre:

Jonathan,
What’s your attachment w/ GeneralGroves??
Tom

Ha! How does she know what 75 degrees feels like? It gets that warm there maybe once a decade, and they certainly don’t heat their houses anywhere near that.

I finished second to Dusty in the pissing contest and only got 3 bottles of 82 Petrus

I once told Francois Adouze that he really needed to step it up and stop drinking all that young shit. 1928 Y’quem? Pul-leeze. Anything that wasn’t aged by the Greeks in amphora is babykilling.

Not really pretentious(?) but I was in a group conversation at a party where a guy (who just loved the sound of his own voice) was talking about wines he liked. I can’t remember the exact words, but it was clear that he kept referring to Cheval Blanc as a white wine. At the time I thought “hmm, maybe they make a white Bordeaux” so I kept my mouth shut.

I can certainly see how this could be said in a pretentious way, but I have also been with people who have had many great wines on many occasions and do have something to say about the wine that is not pretentious, but rather genuine experience and love of wine.

Those are awesome.

To me, the difference may lie mostly in the context of the notes and/or the history of the commenter. The people who bother me are those who I consider to have ‘jumped the line,’ meaning that they never drank the cheap stuff and either had no interest before or have always only bought and drank the “best” in the world wines. For me to truly value your opinion on an 82’ Petrus, I have to know that you have a good level of experience with unclassified Bordeaux, moderate classified bottlings, upper level right bank stuff, and the like. If you never touched wine until you could afford Petrus and that’s all you are interested in, I tune out.

Fantastic Anton

Nuclear weapons science and history is a longstanding interest of mine. The photo just captures the “not amused” sentiment I often find myself expressing at work (animated feature films).

Are you ITB?

Trivia question here: Does anyone know who that guy depicted here is???
Tom

Yup…definitely ITB.
I’m a big fan of the history of the ManhattanProject. Oppenheimer got most of the glory, but I think Grove’s contributions were just as important.
I still have a couple of friends here who were originals on the ManhattanProject. But most have gone on to that great TestSite in the sky.
Tom

No, but I’m quite sure I’ve met him.

I can certainly appreciate that distinction.

Bill Klapp?

Marvin Overton?

Wilfred Van Gorp?

Philip Seymour Hoffman?

He whose 100 point scale name shall not be spoken?
