Why pull punches? He’s un-American.
That may be going a little far.
What if I pointed out to a wine director that he misspelled Blain-Gagnard on the wine menu?
(WS award of excellence btw)
Seems like you are doing them a favor.
You only did that once?
Only once
(This weekend)
A pet peeve of mine is when board members post about wines using initials, or otherwise decline to fully identify origin such as naming the appellation for obscure wines. Perhaps it is just me, but it seems pretentious to post a comment where many readers won’t know what you are talking about. (As always, context is everything when it comes to appropriate use of initials or other shortcuts, IMO.)
Me! On my honeymoon cruise- it was a day at sea so the cruise ship had a lot of on board activities (watermelon sculpting class, dance class, talent show, wine tasting
,etc
The wines being poured were not much to write home about aside from the 96 opus (last wine of the tasting). After smelling and tasting it in my most subtle of New Freakin York accents I exclaim loudly apprently "This is either a shi$$ty 96 opus or most likey 97 opus being snucj in as a 96.
Well unknown to me the wine director was about 100 feet away but heard me clear as day as I am guessing a lot of the room did.
So now I am getting a little red in the face from my loud comment. The wine director asks me who poured me the wine. He brings purer over and he pours a taste and says toe room this a perfect example of the 96 vintage. He then removes the red cloth napkin that was tied around bottle to catch the drips (and covering the label). It was a 97 Opus.
I was the pretentious jerk until the napkin came off! Wine director told me it was one of the most impressive things he witnessed. Next day after returning from our excursions there was a hand written note indicating my wine tasting fee was being returned as well as a bottle 96 and 97 opus in our room.
The friends we made on that cruise who were with me at the tasting still remind me of how snobbish I came off.
priceless indeed
well done
Sir Robert Alfert practicing clean and jerks with a 3L caymus…lol, team Mamood would be proud!

Just last week on this board, someone who admitted to being a Burgundy novice was asking for advice on good mature red Burgundies to buy and share with a friend. After receiving a number of recommendations (including many from iconic producers that were on the far side of the OP’s price parameters) and announcing he had bought two excellent bottles, one poster told the OP his choice was a “bummer.” Pretentious is one of the nicer words to describe that behavior.

But how do I quickly state that I generally prefer CCdB to CdlR, at least in the overall context of the CdN? And as far as Bdx is concerned, LB is clearly superior to SM, unless given 20+ year, at which point it becomes more of a crapshoot. LDH can be nice as well, but opposite popular opinion, I think the VBGR is the better wine compared to the VTGR.

That is extremely pretentions and downright rude.
At a friend’s house locally about a year ago, a new guy got invited to a casual (non-themed) wine dinner. This guy walks in with two bottles in a leather carrier. He saw all the wines on the table, fired up his iPhone and looked up all the Parker scores to see which bottle of his to put on the table that would be appropriate. Also bragged about his four Panerai watches and the Bentley he was going to buy cuz it was a guaranteed panty dropper with the ladies.
if parker scores are indicators of what style a wine can be, i don’t see why checking scores is a pretentious behavior… wouldn’t want to pull out that caymus 40th anniversary at a ipob tasting now would we… also don’t think bragging about his panerai or his would be bentley is all that pretentious if he’s got the watches and ended up buying that car… douchy, yes, not pretentious imho…

And that was after the poster had recommended a wine that was 50% higher than what the thread was asking for (and he would have had to have that one bottle shipped half way around the world) -
But asking for recommendations on Wine Talk can make you crazy - if you want to find a great Pinot Noir bargain for under $60 - ask the group for their recommendations on great Pinot Noir for under $30 a bottle.
LOL, that’s pretty funny, Thomas.

Never saw that as the poster in question is the only member on my ignore list, for good reason. Always nice to be reminded as to why he’s there. Trolls gonna troll.
Anyway, is it pretentious when I take my Zaltos to the cheap n cheerful local Indian and Thai restaurants?

Yeah, Captain Sunshine strikes again.

Of course. But don’t let it stop you.

I prefer Bosconia as well.
