Just received today’s second text which is the higher end text as opposed to the daily drinker text. Was surprised to see the 2018 Bedrock Bedrock Vineyard Heritage for only $3 more than release price.
There’s an “exclusive” high end winetext. It’s the first good offer I’ve seen, although looking at WS it’s not really that great. The no tax and $6 shipping for any amount would help though if you just wanted a few bottles.
I was on the wine text list for about two months, did not buy anything, and just dropped off.
If there is a “cellar text” or some other list for higher end wine, I may be more interested in that. Anyone have a link?
Yes indeed! Just send me an email at brandon@winelibrary.com and I can add you in! If anyone else has any other questions regarding Cellar text please let me know! Wine text has been great for many, but after we launched, there were a ton of people that dropped off the list who were looking for more premium wines. That’s why we started a second list for only premium wines. We are currently beta testing it so the items are much smaller quantity - Today’s offer was Paul Lato Padrino Syrah, yesterday was Bedrock Heritage 2018, day before LLC 2014, day before Almaviva 2016
I’m not on this board often but am always on email if anyone has any questions!
I’ve been following Cellartext for 2-3 months now, and I’ve only jumped on one offer. I got 6 of the Jaboulet Hermitage “Maison Bleue” at $59/pop. Most of the Cellertext offers I’ve seen are listed for the standard online pricing of discount online retailers — usually still 5-10% above the lowest US retail price on W-S. I realize that wines that are more in demand from known producers will never be blown out like some smaller producers with excess inventory (where Winetext can shine), but Cellartext seems like a mediocre value in a pretty crowded space compared to Winetext.
I do like Winetext because the prices make taking a flier on a producer I’ve never heard of more reasonable. Very easy to spring for 6 $18 Rieslings and just hope for the best. Cellartext seems to just be putting expensive wines in front of me at prices I can already get online and just hoping I bite because I’m bored one day (admittedly, this will probably work at least 2-3x per year).
Wine Library would tell you that both are single day discount deals on a single bottle of wine. IME, that’s mostly true of Winetext and kind of a stretch for Cellartext.
Winetext usually gets wines with SRP’s of $30-75 (but which really go for $20-45) and offers them around $12 to $30 or so. Occasionally there’s an outlier, but it’s generally something like a $17 Riesling offer which has a $35 SRP (so they can say “half off”) and which I can find online around 25 bucks. Some deals are better than others, and most wines are smaller producers I’ve never heard of. They usually make a video describing the wine a bit on Instagram (price not mentioned in the video) and then send a text blurb about the wine, price offer as well as a screenshot of a rating/review where the SRP is circled. Generally wines are rated at least 90 points by at least 1 publication (though sometimes they go deep into the list of publications and pull out a Tastings.com score or something, but usually it’s Parker, Spectator, Vinous, Enthusiast or Suckling).
Cellartext I haven’t been following quite as long, but as I said upthread, there seems to be less value here. Usually they put a $75+ wine in front of me that I have heard of and offer it at or slightly above the W-S low price for that wine. Again, they’ll probably catch me bored a few times per year, but there’s significantly less “deal” in these texts, and I’d be surprised if most offers weren’t the Wine Library standard pricing on each bottle as their pricing is usually very competitive already.
Been getting a ton of adds on Facebook promoting winetext by want to be celebrities. Looked at 5 wines and never heard of any of them but got big scores by wine critics which we know is not hard to get a score no a days.
I met him last night. I was walking into an event as he was walking out. Didn’t get to say much other than a quick introduction but I support what he’s doing with NFTs. I wish I would have gotten some time with him but he was leaving. At least 2 of his Veefriends involve wine, Sensible Sommelier and “Wine Shopping Spree" Woodchuk. The woodchuck gets you $10k in wine at Wine Library and 45 min talk with him once per year for 3 years. It’s more than art.
