Fun With Kids

Trying something interesting with my almost 9 year old daughter. Almost every time we have dinner with wine I let her and my 5 year old boy smell my glass when I drink wine. Tonight I wanted to try something a bit more memorable. I opened up two bottles. A 2011 Catena Malbec for me and a 2005 Chateau Cos D’Estournel as our guinea pig. The Malbec for me and the D’Estournel a smell experiment for my daughter. I let her smell the glass on first pour and take notes. I also wanted to compare and contrast against my experience:

Pop and Pour 7:43PM
Chloe’s Smell Notes (2005 D’Estournel):
Tomato, grape, peppers, pumpkin pie, salty

My Smell Notes:
Iodine, salt, pepper, mushroom and yes - Tomato!

I also let her have a taste without swallow and she described almost same thing (tomato, grape, peppers and salt)

8:43 PM
Chloe’s Smell Notes (2005 D’Estournel)
Riper grapes, still tomato’s and pepper

My Smell Notes
Opening up a bit but tomato and pepper still strong for me. Maybe a bit more herbal notes

Going to try again in the morning. The fun part, she’s excited that I have a few bottles saved for her 18th birthday. Anyways, had a 2005 St. Montrose this week and that was the better wine IMO.

Lol, I do the same with my daughter minus the drinking. “grapes”, “strawberries”, “wood”, “grand cru” are common descriptors she uses. Ok, maybe not the last one.

Kids can be remarkably good at TNs

I love this idea.
