I bumped into Alberto during Hood to Coast several times (he was coaching the Nike team and I was coaching my wife’s team), but my most enduring track memory was a track meet at Hayward Field in 1973, when Rod Milburn tied the World Record in the High Hurdles and Dave Wottle beat Pre in the mile, with a time of 3:53.30 - the forth best time ever in that event. Pre was second in a life-time best of 3:54.6. Seven of the eight runners in the race were under 4 minutes.
