Full-Time (Wine) Lovers in Atlanta (Part 1)

Very fun weekend in Atlanta hosted by @Andrew_K and @dcornutt! Thanks to the Atlanta crew for their hospitality and it was great to see some other Berserkers.

I didn’t take formal notes but here are my general impressions.

Night 1:

Amuse Bouche:

2021 Theo Dancer Savignin: Lovely aromatics, very lively acidity. Much more complex and flavorful than you’d expect.

Dinner at Kevin Rathbun Steak wine cellar. Kevin and Andrew K came up with a beautiful tasting menu to accommodate the fantastic wines.

Champagne welcome:

1988 Krug: Wow. Lots of power and richness and still plenty of fine mousse. So much complexity and such a long finish. What a way to start.

1996 Duval-Leroy: Not done any favors here following the Krug, nice zip of acidity but a bit four square.

2002 Salon: Third time with this one in the last couple years and this time was the best. Andrew had opened this like 5-6 hours earlier and it was singing. This was a burly freight train of acidity and structure with a super finish.

Flight 1:

2000 Krug: This had some nuttiness and richness and was flavorful but seemed a bit less fresh than the Cristal, still a wonderful drink. Some people liked this more than the Cristal, though.

2000 Cristal: Super fresh and friendly with a huge streak of lemon curd and acidity. Drinking brilliantly and singing. I wish this wasn’t my last bottle.

Flight 2: This was perhaps my favorite flight of the entire weekend from an intellectual perspective.

2008 Cristal: This should have been full on decanted for 1-3 hours, probably. Indescribably tight and didn’t must budge in an hour or so. You could see the potential, but it was as if it was through a frosted glass window. Don’t open this for at least another 5 years.

2008 Cristal Rose: More accessible than the Blanc version, but still reticent. Beautiful, elegant, and incredibly aromatic, but wasn’t giving up the goods anytime soon. Try again in 3-5 years.

2013 Cristal: This is a champagne for both now and later. Wide open for business. Lively, fresh, and expressive with a big streak of acidity and egg shell. The finish was extremely long. I think this will age nicely as well. Some people thought it had more potential than the 08 but I think that’s just irrational exuberance. That said, it’s a fantastic champagne with a bright future ahead of it.

2013 Cristal Rose: Stunningly beautiful with so much richness. Strawberry cream and peaches with an endless finish. Bravo. WOTF. I think whether the 08 will be better in the long run is a much fairer question for the rose, but they’ll both be amazing.

Flight 3:

1995 Colin Deleger Chevalier-Montrachet: DOA

2008 Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet: not super fresh, but still alive. Lovely lemon curd and richness. Long finish, but lacking some precision.

2010 Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet: Much more in the zone the 08 and singing. A few tropical fruits on the nose. More robust and fresh on the palate and a very long finish.

2014 Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet: Brilliant aromatics, with white peach and some citric cream to steal someone’s phrase. Very long and elegant. Benchmark Chevy.

Flight 4:

2013 Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet

Rounded, with very open and friendly aromatics. Equally diffuse on the palate, without much precision, but very enjoyable drink. Lovely fruits.

2015 Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet

A bit more fruit than the 13, and a bit more rotund, almost flabby. Very rich and opulent.

2017 Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet

Super nose with a bit of struck match and beautiful ripe peach. Much more coiled with better acidity than it’s flightmates. Just a beautiful wine that was definitely WOTF, and perhaps the best of the Chevys period.

Intermezzo:
1988 Yquem with a huge foie gras torchon

Superb nose with just lovely overripe pineapple and some passion fruit on the nose. A little streak of acidity. Finish lasted well into the next course.

Flight 5:

1976 Vogue Musigny

Alive if a bit tired. Tertiary with a little fruit left. Not much here.

1990 Mugnier Musigny

Stunningly beautiful nose that was worth staying with for minutes. The palate was rich and expressive with dark fruits. Extremely long finish.

1995 Vogue Musigny

Surprisingly friendly with some beautiful fruits and nice length. Nice depth on the palate, a little clipped on the finish.

1998 Vogue Musigny

Not as deep as the 95, but a bit more approachable, quite elegant.

Flight 6: what a flight!

2000 Vogue Musigny

This was deep and dark fruited, with lots of power. Compared to the following Mugnier it felt a bit clunky, but was more robust.

2000 Mugnier Musigny

Lithe and elegant with beautiful aromatics and complexity. Nice acidity and very good length and finish.

2001 Vogue Musigny

This had a bit more oak on the nose and was a bit more approachable than the 2000, if a bit lighter bodied.

2001 Mugnier Musigny

Beautiful and super elegant, with a bit more beautiful fruit and a bit more precision on the palate. WOTF.

Flight 7:
1999 Vogue Musigny: corked

1996 Mugnier Musigny this was just beautiful. Some people were surprised how good the 90 and 96 were considering Freddy was still part time while making these but I thought it was phenomenal. Stunning aromatics and quite a bit of power and length.

2002 Vogue Musigny

This was sexy with beautiful and integrated oak, immense power and some nice aromatics. This had super length and was more elegant than the other vogue.

Flight 8:

2007 Vogue Musigny

A lighter bodied vogue that paired nicely with the cheese course. A bit more on the elegant side.

2007 Mugnier Musigny
Beautiful ethereal Musigny which really delivered.

Dessert:
1990 Yquem. Very similar to the 1988 with immense length, perhaps a bit less acidity.

Nightcap:

2014 Roumier Cras

Surprisingly friendly and beautiful wine which was a nice way to end the evening.

Thanks to everyone for contributing these gems and making it quite the special weekend! I think it ended up being 62 or 63 over 65 wines across 2 days for the 12 of us.

All about the brawn and depth on Friday with Musigny + Chevy.
All the beauty and sexiness on Saturday with Amoureuses + Monty.

Will write up notes this afternoon.

Thanks for sharing notes on some pretty fantastic wines. The wines were eye popping, but the menu might even be more exciting. Well, looking at those wines that’s probably an exaggeration, but brilliant nonetheless. Sounds like it was fantastic. Thanks again!

ATLANTA MUSIGNY & CHEVY DINNER - (4/21/2023)

Openers

  • 1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne
Fully mature, but not tired in the least. Great acid core with wonderful oxidative notes, great body and a long finish. (95 points)
  • 1996 Duval-Leroy Champagne Femme de Champagne - France, Champagne
All there, but just lacking some energy. Good drink on its own, 3/3 in the flight. (91 points)
  • 2002 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut - France, Champagne
Wow. Opened and recorked 5 hours ahead of time and it needed every bit. Every time we've had this it was PnP and tight as a drum. Finally I had the time to prep a bottle properly and it showed. Absolutely singing with fruit, acid, body and a long, long finish. This is Salon at its best, built for the long haul. It was still singing for the last sip nearly 10 hours after opening. (97 points)

Champagne Flight 1

  • 2000 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne
Good fruit from the vintage, but this bottle was a bit tired and lacking energy. It was classic Krug richness. (92 points)
  • 2000 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne
So young and fresh, it was hard to believe it was 2000. But it's wide open for business and classic lemon with a solid core of acid. This is the one to drink for the next few years while you're waiting for your 2002, 2008, etc. (94 points)

Champagne Flight 2

  • 2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne
PnP. Right out of the gate it was wide open and brilliant. Aromas bursting out of the glass and all there on the palate. Could have been WOTF. Unfortunately 10 minutes later it shut down hard and was brutally tight and unyielding for the rest of the evening. Needs many years.
  • 2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Rosé - France, Champagne
PnP. Tight, but showing lots of promise with lovely red fruits and great acid.
  • 2013 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne
PnP. Completely wide open and ready to drink. Such a beautiful wine with elegance and structure. Many say this will be better than the 08 in time, who knows, but it certainly is right now. (96 points)
  • 2013 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Rosé - France, Champagne
PnP. Absolutely wonderful. Beautiful strawberry notes with layer and layers of creamy mousse. Second time having this recently and it was easily best Champ on the table both times. So stunning and elegant. (98 points)

Chevy Flight 1

  • 1995 Michel Colin-Deléger et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
A bit tired. Not pox, but probably would have been lovely a few years ago.
  • 2008 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Wonderful wine with all the Chevy goods. Fully mature and ready to drink. Against the younger bottles in the flight it seemed a bit over, but I think on its own it was elegant and beautiful with lots of richness and a nice finish. (95 points)
  • 2010 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Bright and fresh, this was open for business with the mature notes combined with the bright, freshness that you want. (96 points)
  • 2014 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Bright and fresh, this was simply stunning and has all the goods. Layers of white fruits and great body with a beautiful finish. (98 points)

Chevy Flight 2

  • 2013 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Open and enjoyable, but not among the best of the night. (93 points)
  • 2015 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. More of everything compared to the 13, lots of rich fruit, but lacking definition. (94 points)
  • 2017 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Such a wonderful wine, this has all the pieces together. Great fruit, structure and acidity. Still such a baby. WOTF, but I still preferred the Leflaives as a whole. (95 points)

Intermezzo

  • 1988 Château d'Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Supremely dense and delicious and a wonderful intermezzo. (97 points)

Moose Flight 1

Moose Flight 2

Moose Flight 3

Moose Flight 4

Dessert

  • 1990 Château d'Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Very good with layers of candied fruits and good acidity. (95 points)

The menu the first night was very good. Creative and well paired with two exceptions; the potatoes with the shell steak were inedibly salty, not sure what happened there. The Alli Otto were very good but spicy which didn’t go well with burgundy

The food the second day was better, spectacular in fact. Notes soon.

A beautiful night. I absolutely LOVED the 88 Krug. A very fresh vibrant example. Very few other Champagnes come close when it is like this. The 2013 Cristals are my personal favorites of the rest.

The Leflaives were the class of the Chevaliers. 2014 is almost a perfect wine like the next night 2014 Lafon Montrachet. The Ramonet 2017 was very good but the Ramonets we had were just not as complete as the Leflaives.

The Musignys were a real treat. My personal favorites were the two 2000s but I love the 2001s too. That was a very good flight. The 1990/1996 Mugniers were stunning. Surprising since he was flying airplanes.

It is a rare opportunity to taste all of these wines but so much better to taste them with friends and have a wonderful time while exploring the wines.

Safe travels friends who came in from out of town.

An epic weekend indeed, and an equally epic way to meet a bunch of Berserkers. It was great getting to know everyone, and the effort @Andrew_K and @dcornutt put into this weekend was evident every step of the way. The food was fantastic across the board with the exception of those puzzling potatoes. Some highlights from a cornucopia of exceptional wines…

  • 1988 Krug: Jaw-droppingly good, headlined by a candied finish that lingered in whispers and was akin to a biscuit flavored jolly rancher. The best champagne of the night (2013 Cristal rose came close), the best champagne I’ve ever tasted, and in fact my favorite wine of the weekend.

  • 2008 vs. 2013 Cristal flight: I agree with @MChang that this was the most fascinating flight of the night. The 2008s were rippling with potential but really were not sharing much of that with us in comparison to the 2013s, which floored me. The 2013 rose might be in my top 5 for the weekend. So much gorgeous strawberry delivered in layers with a long finish. Acidity and structure were perfect for the fruit; just a really, really balanced champagne of the highest caliber.

  • 2014 Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet: Chevy of the night, and pretty close to the platonic ideal of what you’d want to see from Chevalier-Montrachet. A laser beam of white fruit with a structure that fans out on the palate and never ends. Overall the Leflaives outperformed the Ramonets in my book, although the 2008 had a touch of botrytis that was interesting if not entirely welcome.

  • 2017 Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet: Second best Chevy of the night imo, and the only Ramonet to rate ahead of any Leflaive. A nice nose with prominent struck match, hinting at the fruit to come. On the palate, a wildly energetic display of exotic fruits that danced around the mouth. The 2013 and 2015 seemed a bit plodding when compared to the wines of the previous flight.

  • 1990 Mugnier Musigny: A show-stopping bouquet that filled the room as it was being poured. Frankly, this was the best-smelling wine I’ve ever experienced. I was fanboying hard. Billows of violets and savory, sappy red and purple fruit. As this wine was being poured, it reminds me of the bloom phase of an exceptional single-origin coffee being made in a pour-over; it gave you preview of everything you would experience when drinking it, in kaleidoscopic fashion. It would have been close to impossible for the palate to live up, and unfortunately it didn’t, and was surpassed in my opinion by the 1996 and possibly the 2000. The bouquet on this wine was my single favorite attribute of any wine across both nights.

  • 2000/2001 Mugnier Musigny: I was in the camp that favored the 2000, which seemed ever so slightly more harmonious. Both were classy and open with violets ushering in weighty yet lifted purple fruit, and long finishes. Exceptional wines, yet eclipsed for my palate by the 1996 which just effortlessly rippled with power, structure, and acidity.

  • 2002 Vögue Musigny: Best showing from this producer with nothing out of place. Power and elegance perfectly married, a touch lighter fruited than the rest. The 2007 was puzzling; others enjoyed it more but it had an intensely off-putting sour note that confused me.

  • 1988/1990 d’Yquem: Everything you’d hope for, layers of dense caramel, candied fruit accompanied by lovely acidity, and an endless finish. The 88 was a touch ahead in my book.
