Friday night pizza TNs: Three QPR's from Italy

  • 2011 Elio Altare Dolcetto d’Alba - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba (10/10/2014)
Almost a year since my last TN on this wine. Still an opaque purple at the core, lightening out to ruby on the rim. “Soft”, fruity nose.

Accessible, and pleasant. Not complex, but tasty. IMO, fully mature, and probably requiring drinking in the next five years if you want to catch it before decline.

Very approachable on the palate, ripe red fruits, nice framing acidity. This doesn’t feel like it will be worth aging, but a good wine to drink currently while you are waiting for your 2010 Felsina CCR to blossom.

  • 2012 Montalbera Grignolino d’Asti - Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Grignolino d’Asti (10/10/2014)
About four months since my last look at this wine; very lightly colored, even lighter than a typical Nerello Mascalese. Cherry-scented nose & menthol accents.

Nice acidity, ripe red fruits - great QPR here. Light-bodied, a wine you could drink with appetizers and conversation.
