French Government Endorses Burgundy Vineyards, Champagne for UNESCO Status

In work not unrelated to that of our own Historic Vineyard Society:

‘We have wanted to do this for a long time,’ Claude Chevalier, president of Burgundy wine trade body BIVB and who runs Domaine Chevalier, told decanter.com. ‘We need to protect our heritage. We are doing this for our future cousins in 20 or 30 years.’

I’ll say this about the French (and to their great credit) - they cherish their heritage.

Yeah but this will only go so far in face of a current French government whose only interest is to kill small producers through taxes, taxes and more taxes. Great for the insurance companies, pension funds, banks and other corporate entities that own vast swaths of vineyards and live off of tax breaks and write offs. I have close friends who are RM Champagne producers for six generations, make a top flight/award winning Champagne and they are ready to throw in the towel…and will probably have to once the current generations dies and the next one has to pay the tax bill.

The Lavaux in the canton Vaud was give World Heritage status back in 2007 and in spite of Hollande, let’s hope it works out for the French!

They did it!
